Would love some help with "Invalid Directory" error

I've treated myself to a HD200 for xmas I have downloaded the latest beta firmware but am having trouble getting to the media on another PC on the network. I'm getting the "Invalid Directory" message when trying to "Browse the local Network" but unlike the posters in the other threads I've read on this I'm not even getting a list of shares - just 0 items and a big "Invalid Directory" in the middle of the screen. What am I doing wrong?

I normally have the guest account disabled and would prefer to keep it that way so would like to be able to specify a username and password for the sage box to use on the network, but don't know where I do that??

For the purposes of trying to get it working though I've enabled guest access and verified that from another PC I can see and access the shares without providing any credentials. Still no love from the HD200. Have tried cold boots, windows firewall is disabled... out of ideas...hoping someone can give me some tips - nothing more frustrating than a christmas present that doesn't work

Merry Xmas to you all!

I've logged this issue with Sage support. Will post back if there's any resolution. In the meantime if you have any ideas, please send them through.

Some more background on my network config:

I have an ADSL modem/router acting as the DHCP server. The sage extender and media server are both directly connected to it (by cable). The media server is in a workgroup called WORKGROUP and on IP address 10.1.1.3. It's an XP Pro machine and I have trimmed the install down using nLite. Simple file sharing is disabled, but I've enabled the guest account even though I don't really want to use the guest account if possible - I'd prefer to give the HD200 and account/password to use...

Although I don't think it should be relevant, I've tried enabling the SMB server on the HD200 and it displays the correct workgroup. I can access it from the other PCs on the network no problems. It is on IP address 10.1.1.4.

Did you try the beta firmware? (type 2382 on the System Update menu to get the beta firmware)

I'm still having a heck of a time finding where to set the workgroup name. I have a Windows 2000 active directory I am trying to connect to, along with another peer workgroup. Anytime I go into File System Network Browser, it says "0 items in : network workgroups".

scott2020: You'll only be able to see the setting if you turn "on" the SMB server - I think it is on the server page if I remember correctly. I'm still not 100% if that option affects the network browsing anyway.

OK, I did that so I wasn't far off. I had beta firmware from 1222, so I am updating to 1223 now.

I'm running the 1224 beta on my hd200 and get this same behavior, Invalid Directory as soon as I try to browse my local network.

What's odd is this was working at one point, but between beta upgrades and me adding the guest account to my shares (while trouble shooting getting this error when drilling into a server when it would show servers) it stopped working.

Strange and mildly frustrating.

Working great as an extender however.

I have done the reset with delete key since updating to latest firmware.

Haven't let support know yet, but will today.

thanks

Yep, as an extender it is great. 1223 didn't help me either. I suppose I don't need to browse local files but it bugs me to death that it doesn't work! Sorry.

Ok, I had a nice reply written here confirming the issue with one of my networked PCs... Then I took a closer look at the numerical text input interface and realized it was using CAPS. I switched it to lowercase, provided the credentials for that PC and it successfully showed me all its shares.

The only strange thing at this point is that I don't remember setting that PC up to require name/password. Anyone remember where to set this under WinXP for the machine in general when the individual shares have valid (at least read, if not full access) for the Everyone group?

I've had some issues actually playing the video, but I'll put that into another thread...

There are a few settings in WinXP Pro but the main one is whether you have "Use Simple File Sharing" enabled in the View Options in explorer. This controls whether people must authenticate or simply go in as guest. Be careful also that there are permissions on the share as well as permissions on the folder (NTFS) permissions....

There is another thread around dealing with a lot of issues around getting Invalid Directory errors when accessing shares (http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37388) the reason I started a separate one for my problem was because I don't even get as far as seeing a list of PCs/shares on the network. Therefore I get no option to provide credentials etc...
