Codec selection ???

Trying to convert to SageTV from Mediaportal. Codec selection is so easy in Mediaportal compared to Sagetv; is their and easy way?

I have a 1080p bluray h264 mkv that stutters in Sagetv. Also have a problem with setting up avi's.

Is their a simple walk through. I have Coreavc and PowerDVD 8 at my disposal.

I really want to give Sagetv a go but it seems like a steep curve to get it going.

Thanks in advance,

Kryspy

I may be misunderstanding but selecting the codec in similar to mediaportal:

Got to the settings and then detailed settings.

Under the Video option (I think) there are options for the video codec, audio codec, audio renderer and renderer (such as EVR and VMR9). Just select the option and you will be presented with a list of installed codecs; select the one you want and you are away.

PowerDVD 8 should work fine.

Those are only for Mpeg2 option. Sage still does not offer such UI configuration (unlike Mediaportal) for H.264. Use the following lines in your properties file instead

always_use_dshow_player=true

videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (PDVD8)

or

videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=CoreAVC Video Decoder

Without these configurations, Sage will just use the in-build player which does not support DXVA at all.

cychou,

I did that but for some reason it is choking on some of my 720p .avi files. They take forever to load (round circle for about a minute) and they stutter frame by frame.

These play fine in Mediaportal. And yes I was referring to h264 UI set up.

Seems odd that a paid for app doesn't have a extensive set up like Mediaportal.

I want o move towards I server/STB central location and extender/HTPC for my house and Sage fits the bill.

The audio might be the culprit as well. Take a look to see what format the audio is for the files you are having problems with. If you have a player that plays the file back fine, look to see what decoder that player is using for the audio. You can then set sage to match.

Hmmm,

I am using ac3 filter in Mediaportal and all is good. Is their a way to force ac3filter for h264 avi. My 1080p mkv play fine. I am going to just try changing the extension to .mp4 and see what happens.

Thank you for this post. This let me force the Cyberlink h264 decoder and AC3Filter. For some reason Sage would never use my own DShow audio decoders when "Default" was selected, regardless of merit. Not sure what I was doing wrong but this fixes the problem.
