When will HD-PVR support DTS

Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone knew when/if the HD-PVR will support DTS? Is it even possible? If I play something with DTS the HD-PVR obviously doesn't like it. It will play for 2 seconds (no audio though) then pause, play, pause, etc.

Or does anyone know of a in-line optical converter that will transcode DTS to DD?

Dont' believe there are any converters available, or none that would be worth the cost (quite a bit of processing involved). My question for you is, What source are you recording with an HD-PVR that has DTS sound? DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD you'd be better off just ripping on the computer.

Hauppauge has never advertised DTS support for the HD-PVR so why would you assume it would eventually have it? Isn't Dolby Digital "good enough"?

The HD-PVR is primarly aimed at capturing live HDTV sources, which as far as I am aware don't broadcast DTS.

If you are trying to use it to cap actual media like BD, DVD, etc you're far better off ripping as Fuzzy says. In addition to processing issues there are also licensing fees to consider, i.e. I seriously doubt you will see support for DTS added.

What audio format do the HDHRs record in? When I get an HD recording from my HDHR it lights up the little blue light on my reciever that says "DTS" (Sony ES reciever). I always assumed it was a DTS signal.

Should be Dolby Digital 5.1 from many HD stations.

The HDHR will record the exact stream that is broadcast by the network. As far as I'm aware, the only formats that are standardized to be broadcast on ATSC is MPEG Audio (stereo) and AC3 (Dolby Digital, anywhere from 2.0 to 5.1). Not sure where your DTS audio is coming from, or if your reciever is just wrong somehow?

You should be able to check what is actually being recorded in the file by running it through G-Spot or some other analyser software.

The blue light on my Sony receiver represents either DD 5.1 or DTS. When the stream first starts it will spell out what it is on the LED info panel of the receiver. Also look real close in the info panel and you should see small letters for AC3 or DTS and also the level of the subwoofer.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, it is for BD, no I don't have a BDROM for my computer. Yes using the HDPVR to backup BD's is legal, no the other way is not. I was wondering because I saw this in Hauppauge's faq:

The HD PVR supports AC-3 (5.1) or 2 channel AAC audio capture. AAC 2 channel is received using RCA audio inputs, or SPDIF when set to PCM. If using SPDIF with bit stream audio, you will get 5.1 AC-3 Dolby Digital. DTS audio is currently not supported.

Hearing the word "Currently" got me excited.

While DTS probably COULD be added with a firmware change, I'm guessing it's pretty far down the priority list, as you Blu-Ray situation is rather rare among those who would actually purchase a HD-PVR. Most, if looking to get a blu-ray player, would just opt for the cheaper BD-ROM solution.. Hell, i just bought mine for $75, which included the $40+ PowerDVD app.
