To enable logging, just add /saveLog to your SJQ command (or mediaShrink.defaults.txt).

As for the TV show DVD, its not too unusually for TV show DVD's to confuse mediaShrink. The usual reasons are

1) Episodes are separated by chapter in one giant title. (Common for Anime and really cheap TV show DVD's)
2) Episodes length varies too much (17 min vs 22 min) to detect. (Happens occasionally with non-network shows like HBO and Showtime).
3) Two-part episodes in one title (season premieres/finales ex. Firefly Disc 1).
4) Discs with special features that are roughly the same length as an episode (Happens occasionally on last DVD of season).

That being said, i'm constantly tweaking it for better performance, so once you enable logging be sure and post the output so I can see why its failing for you.

sjq/ms is still having problems with UNC even if I use the batch file.

Code:
Sun Mar 28 09:23:54 EDT 2010: Starting task with priority 1/1/10
Executing command line: c:/progs/shrink/mediaShrink.bat "\\WHS\SageTV\ThisOldHouse-1508530-0.mpg" /inPlace /batch /vprofile HQ /vbitrate 2500 /onepass
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
The system cannot find the batch label specified - EOF

 Executing command: "c:\progs\shrink\mediaEngine.exe" /saveLog /defaultProfile autoEncode /findFileRegEx "avi|mpg|mkv|mp4|mpeg|VIDEO_TS|ts|ogm|divx|mpts|dvr-ms" /batch /mediaShrink fixBug "\\WHS\SageTV\ThisOldHouse-1508530-0.mpg" "C:\inPlace" "C:\batch" "C:\vprofile" "C:\sjqc\sjqc\sjqc_winntsvc\bin\HQ" "C:\vbitrate" "C:\sjqc\sjqc\sjqc_winntsvc\bin\2500" "C:\onepass"

Yep, ffmpeg and handbrake put the tracks in a different order. Strange, figured that be pretty rare.

Do you want me to submit a formal bug? I believe it worked in the last version, did something change that would affect that? I had previously compressed Sesame Street shows... what can I say, I just love the stuff.

I need a DVD to MKV converter with subtitles and all audio intact, is this the tool for the job or is it overkill? Is there a free tool that is simpler to use? What do you guys use?

No sound, no closed-caption text in a few test recordings

Sent this via PM to evilpenguin but probably should have posted here in case other folks are experiencing these same issues. That said, I've been testing a batch of 5 minute clips on the latest version of mediaShrink (3b). Attached log output is for a 4 clip run -- these 4 clips suffered issues when part of a larger test, so I pulled them out and tested again and the errors were repeated.

Clip: Hitman -- HD recording made on an HDHomeRun tuner. Original recording has 2 audio channels, 1 in English the other in Spanish.
Issue: No audio at all in the encoded file. CC is correctly included.

Clip: GeneSimmons -- SD recording made on an HDHomeRun tuner.
Issue: No CC text in the encoded file. Audio is ok.

Clip: Biography -- SD recording made on an HDHomeRun tuner.
Issue: No CC text in the encoded file. Audio is ok.

Clip: TheLongestNight -- SD recording made on an HDHomeRun tuner.
Issue: No CC text in the encoded file. Audio is ok.

Was hoping you could provide some guidance as to what I can do to fix these issues.

Many thanks

First of all, thanks for the great data/logs! As for the specific issues...

This is another case where ffmpeg and handbrake are presenting the audio tracks in a different order. I'm working on a fix, I hope to have it out this weekend.

ffmpeg:
Code:
      + Stream #0.1[0x1c2], 1/90000: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 192 kb/s
      + Stream #0.2[0x81], 1/90000: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1, s16, 384 kb/s
Handbrake:
Code:
      + + 1, Unknown (AC3) (5.1 ch) (iso639-2: und), 48000Hz, 384000bps
      + + 2, Unknown (MPEG) (2.0 ch) (iso639-2: und)

I recently switched over to using Handbrake for CC detection, but clearly they're not 100% accurate. Shouldn't be a problem though, I sill have all my old CC detection in the code which uses CCextractor, and that's able to see all of the CC tracks that handbrake misses.

I'll roll that into the next release as well.

Yeah, I upgrade my version of ffmpeg and I think that caused all the problems. I could just downgrade again, but there's enough info to sync the data between the handbrake and ffmpeg regardless of the versions so i'm gonna focus on that.

Yeah, CCextractor tends to always pull the CC text without issue. I'll keep an eye out for your update. Thanks!

Here you go! Thanks for all your hard work. To say it's appreciated is an understatement of massive proportions.

Along with my UNC path issue, it also will randomly decide to process a file after a number of failed attempts (I can't seem to figure out what is causing it to do so), but when it completes it, the filename is weird.

Code:
CooksCountryFromAmericasTestKitchen-AutumnSupper-1965353-0.autoEncode.mkv
It includes the "autoencode" in there.

The autoencode naming of the file is normal. If you do not use inplace then it will keep the files with the autoencode on the name. If you choose to replace the original file then the last step is to rename and delete the original. If you are choosing Inplace and you still see the autoencode in the file name then your jobs are failing.

yeah, I'm using /inplace

Code:
MEDIASHRINKHQ
{
   :CPU "LOW"
   :MAX 1
   :RESOURCES 51
   "c:/progs/shrink/mediaShrink.bat \"%c%\" /inPlace /batch /vprofile HQ /vbitrate 2500 /twopass"
}
I'll have to take Mediashrink out of SJQ for the time being. It's giving me a few headaches.

ohpleaseno,

I do not see how you can start Mediashrink the way you are... the substitutions will not take can you post your mediashrink.bat file.

it's basically an exact copy of the file included with mediashrink

all this is being ignored "/inPlace /batch /vprofile HQ /vbitrate 2500 /twopass that is why it is not working the way you want it."

You can create a batchfile with those specific parameters and give it a unique name then run that from SJQ.

Code:
@ECHO OFF

:LOOP
IF (%1)==() GOTO NEXT
set COMMAND=%COMMAND% "%~f1" /inPlace /batch /vprofile HQ /vbitrate 2500 /twopass
shift
GOTO LOOP

:NEXT
cd /D "c:\progs\shrink"
start /I /B /LOW /WAIT mediaShrink.exe %COMMAND%
GOTO EOF

If you do not feel like making a batchjob for every type of encode.... You can use my batch job below(created for SJQ) just change the paths accordingly. You can put any substitution you want and media shrink will pick it up.

SJQmediashrink.bat
Code:
set shrinkopt=%2
for /f "useback tokens=*" %%a in ('%shrinkopt%') do set shrinkopt=%%~a
set COMMAND=%COMMAND% "%~f1" %shrinkopt%
cd /D "S:\SJQSAGE\mediashrink3"
start /I /B /LOW /WAIT mediaShrink.exe %COMMAND%

SJQ client rule.. make sure all substitutions are included in quotes in my example between the text in red.

Code:
   "S:\\SJQSAGE\\mediashrink3\\SJQMEDIASHRINK.bat \"%c%\" \"/vbitrate 1000 /xRes 480 /container mp4 /vcodec ffmpeg /noDecomb /onePass /autoCrop /acodec faac /batch /outputDirectory t:\\saget /centralWorkFolder c:\\temp\""
