EP -

Can you take a quick peek at this log file?

Mediashrink is cutting out commercials and converting to MP4/divx. This works fine sometimes, but other times, I get a file with only the first ~ 300kb of the converted file.

I'm not sure what's happening. The VPRJ file has the usual amount of cuts (i.e., the whole show isn't marked as a commercial)
Code:
<Filename>R:\tv\TheDailyShowWithJonStewart-9738772-0.mpg
<Cut>3982979000:5944271667
<Cut>12834154667:14035021000
<Cut>15436087333:17749398333
any thoughts as to what could cause only a second or so of the file to be output?

edit:
I also get this "No Audio or Video" error sometimes, even though the source file seems fine.

perl58.dll not found error message

Evilpenguin,

I downloaded and extracted the zip and ran mediaShrink.exe and I get perl58.dll not found error message. Where do I obtain this dll from? I installed ActiveState Perl and that did not resolve the issue.

TIA!

It looks like VRD cuts the video correctly but then Handbrake fails. Can you try it with just the default options?

I've never seen that before, you shouldn't need any extra .dll's. I'm not sure what's going on.

EP,

The no video audio problem has to do with Videoredo when it processes some files. I completetly stopped cutting commercials with videoredo because I too was getting incomplete encodes.

see this post.. I was working with Edonkey and i found out that some files I was using videoredo on showed no video or audio.

Thanks for the tool EP - I'm gonna try it out on some of my DVD's.

I have a question though - what type of video files does this work on? I have TV shows (720p & 1080i OTA recordings) that were compressed using SageTV's built in tool. Can we re-run those avi files through this? Would there be any benefits?

What do you use to remove commercials?

It seems that I'm having good luck with mediashrink if I use video redo to cut the commercials first, and then process the file for other purposes. If I try to do it all at once, it's more likely to fail.

I stopped cutting mpg commercials. If I want to archive my recordings and keep them... I usually encode to avi and then I use mencoder to cut the commercials out of the avi. Cutting commercials is a hit or miss with both Videoredo and mencoder when working with Sage MPG recordings of diff types... It seems that it always fails on the ones I want to keep "Murphy's Law".

Unfortunately I have not found a way to cut MP4 or MKV.

What I would like to do is keep using Videoredo to cut commercials... but maybe have Penguin check the Duration of the file and if it is too small. Do not replace it and maybe create an error file along side the original file so that I can key on it and fix it.

Using the default options I'm pretty much at 99.9% success rate with VRD commercial cutting and encoding in the same pass with this tool.

That's doable.

When I use the default options, I agree that things work pretty well (cutting commercials and converting to mkv).

My primary purpose in using this is to convert specific shows to MP4 so I can watch them on the way to work. This only seems to work 20% of the time. I either get a 300kb file or an Audio/Video error.

I'm still testing this, so I don't have much else to report. I've tried running ffmpeg, and that seems to work well to covert the cut file to MP4 (een when mediashrink choked). I'll try handbrake soon and see how it does by itself.

What device are you encoding for?

BB curve. I know it likes MP4s, but I'm not sure what else.

Handbrake has custom profiles for hardware devices, I imagine one of them would give you much better reliability in that area. I've got some code specifically for hardware devices, but I still need to take the time to finish it and hook it up.

OK, thanks. I'll see how handbrake does when I run it independent of mediashrink. I'll also see what I can dig up on the device-specific profiles.

EP,
I tried forcing mencoder without cutting any commercials and I get the audio video error. Perhaps there is something missing on the way your autoencode profile is getting the audio?

That's a simple bug, I'm not setting the number of threads which is causing mencoder to fail instantly.
Code:
...:precmp=0:vqcomp=0.6:turbo:threads=
Easy fix is to just add
Code:
/CPUs 2
Or however many cores you have to mediaShrink.defaults.txt.

u know i've been a feen of the video tools 3.0 since i started using sage, so i cant wait for the update using this version.

but anyhow i've been playing around with this and just using the autoencode which converts to H264 it's taking quite a long time. using my old X2 3800+ it's about 15fps and the worst part is, that it uses 100% cpu and sage is pretty much dead during this whole time, if it's open it takes about 30 second to go from one selection to the next and if i put it to sleep i cant wake it back up lol

i even tried it on my friends brand new E8400 C2D (which i was going to upgrade to next), but even there it looks like it is very time consuming. mind u the fps went up to 30fps, but it was still around 100% cpu usage.

so im just wondering any way to bring it down on the cpu scale, so that sage works normally. cuz i do love the quality of autoencode and xvid is not acceptable anymore lol

I'm having trouble getting this to run in below normal priority on its own. There's a good work around you can use that uses a batch file to launch mediaShink...

Code:
@ECHO OFF
set DIRECTORY="C:\mediaScraper\"

:LOOP
IF (%1)==() GOTO NEXT
set COMMAND=%COMMAND% "%~f1"
shift
GOTO LOOP

:NEXT
cd /D "%DIRECTORY%"
start /BELOWNORMAL /WAIT /B mediaShrink.exe %COMMAND%

You can modify C:\mediaScraper to be whatever your path is.
