Handling Multiple Resolutions with HD-PVR - To fill my Screen

I searched and didn't see any good answers here..

I have the HD-PVR so I can capture 480,720 and 1080.

720 fills the screen horizontally.
480 content is in the middle of the screen with lots of space around it.
i am guessing 1080 will completely fill the screen , but haven't tried.

I would like the content to always fill my screen. I played around with the "stretch" and that appears it will make the 480 fit the whole screen (at least horizontally). But then I am permanently setting stretch to %133 for all content I believe. So when a 720 video comes on , which doesn't need stretching I assume it will stretch it and cut off video.

A "stretch" setting per content type (480,720,1080) would fix this but do not see it anywhere.

And yes, I have played around with the source "Fill, 4:3,16:9" and other settings.

The goal is just to make whatever resolution fit my full screen.

Don't even get me started on the PS3. When I stream to the PS3 from sage using tversity I really lose a lot of screen space, but won't go there right now.

I would assume that your STB is set to a fix resolution meaning it only outputs say 720P. If this is the case, then the HDPVR is receiving SD content (480P) as 720P which means it is getting it with the black bars and therefore no matter what you do you are going to get the black bars (since the actual recording contains those black bars). If your STB can do it, you need to set it to output the native resolution. If you do this, then the HDPVR will actual record in 480P, 720P and 1080i, rather than the set resolution of 720P (could be 1080i). If you are using native relolution recording, then if you set Sage to FILL you will get your "Stretched" image....

Long story short....Change the setting on your STB!

STB is set to handle multiple resolutions

I believe my STB is to send the native signal. If it is 480, it will show it in 480..720 content gets sent in 720,etc..

I want it sent in the native format, and am pretty sure it is doing so..

Are you saying you have mixed content always fill your screen ? Are you doing Hi-Def (HD-pvr, or other)? If so what are your settings..

Have you tried your recordings in the software (TME) that comes with the HDPVR? You can then verify what the HDPVR is recording. You should be able to check if the recording actually has black bars on the sides or not.

I myself have my STB set to output 1080i and therefore always end up with black bars on the sides for SD content. I prefer this. I am not even sure my VIP211 can do native output switching.

My set top box is set to output 720p for HD and 480p for SD. The 480p signal is actually stretched to 720x480 (by the STB), which I don't really like. To work around this on the Sage side, I've assigned the 4:3 aspect ratio to the SD channels and native resolution to the HD channels.
This is pretty much the opposite what you want, but you should be able to achieve the desired results with a similar approach, by setting the SD channels to a fill mode.

How did you assign different aspects dpending on SD and HD. ? Was this in Sage? That would be great. I could tell it to stretch SD 133 and leave HD at 100 horizontal..that seems to be the main problem right now.

on another note..Streaming to the PS3 still refuses to play anything full screen unless it is native 1920x1080

*cough* 480p is 720x480, it's not stretching anything. It's an anamorphic resolution.

What I mean is that 4:3 resolution screens get output as 720x480 without black frames on the side (to make-up for the difference between 640 and 720). The picture gets stretched as a result. If I display this as "native", then it's stretched, whereas, if I display it as 4:3, then it's correct.
But that really has not much to do with the HD PVR, it's rather the behaviour of the STB.

That can be done with this: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/down...?do=file&id=28
You can set one default, and change individual channels, if you like (can be quite an effort though for a larger amount of channels)

Thanks. Also, I did find the setting on my STB, that says "stretch" and now everything works..looks like it is recording in 720x480 like you said..

not sure how I missed the "stretch" choice, it was right above "aspect" and "resolution" i have a SA4250
