Tivo Replacement?

I'm currently in the process of building a WHS that will hold our media (photos, videos, music...). I also plan to get SageTV for WHS and an HDHR so it will be able to act like a PVR. Then upstairs would be an HD200 for the actual viewing. Does this sound correct? Will I be able to schedule recordings through the HD200, like a Tivo, or does that have to be done on the server?

One thing I noticed while browsing this site is that there are a lot of discussions, but not very many guides. It would be nice to have some sort of feature guide, or even a video demo so people can see how the program/hardware actually works...

Yup, that sounds about right, you do all the operation through the HD200. The only thing I can think of off hand that you'd have to do on the WHS machine is the initial scan on the HDHR.

Any tuner cards/plug-ins in the SageTV Server will give you the PVR function, watchable and controllable from any Media Extender, Client or Placeshifter.

That's where I'm coming from right now.

New user, just migrated to WHS.

My experience so far: is "Yes" to all. I haven't got a lot of Tivo experience, but I bought one awhile ago; took it home, fooled around long enough for it to dawn on me that I was going to be locked into $14.00/month - or more - until the end of time; and returned it.

SageTV for me is Tivo plus portablility (can serve many TVs) minus the monthly cost.

You are not alone. I find it frustrating that SageTV is such a great product and the support is of such a high level, but that there's this lack of coherence in the presentation of the whole product.

I want these guys to make a lot of money so the product will continue to evolve.

Yet I've corresponded with at least three technically-oriented people who came away from the SageTV web site *still* wondering what SageTV does.

I suggested that they hire the guy who wrote this:

http://www.geektonic.com/2009/01/sag...geektonic.html

to overhaul their web site - at least the splash/intro part. But nobody seemed impressed.

I really think that should support some wiki pages. I think with the number of sophisticated users here, we'd have some good pages.
