Interesting.

The only problem I have with the Haali+VSFilter combo is that VSFilter doesn't know what to do with fading VOB subtitles. All it does is display the first "frame" of the fade so they never go completely opaque and you can barely see them to begin with.

Is your filter going to be capable of displaying VOB style subtitles or just SRT?

My advise is to build one (like I did) and go thru the experience of doing it! After all teh headaches I went thru, I decided the HD200 was a better route but the learning experience was fantastic!

You might want to look at the avsforum HTPC section. They have guidelines and recommended builds for small form factor pcs. Still, IIRC the recommended mini-itx build is still $400

FWIW, I bought an Acer Aspire x1700 on ebay for about $350. It's fairly small and powerful, but it's not going to match a hardware extender in terms of stability, silence, or reliability (for those things that the extender is designed to do).

just SRT initially (what I use), the implementation should be able to be adapted to any text based subtitle though.

I'm definitely interested in this now. I just noticed that you're right, not that I ever doubted you, that the Haali+VSFilter option doesn't allow hardware accleration. If I play an HD MKV without subtitles it is fully accelerated and uses less than 5% per core but Pan's Labyrinth which I now have with SRT subtitles is not accelerated and uses about 40% per core to play.

Definitely interested.
