Unhappy

Well this sucks... My second extender just died, same symptom as the first. So I decided to open it up and I am not surprised it finally failed. The power supply circuit board looks like an amateur built it. Solder everywhere, white glue everywhere, even scratched up here and there. All of this BEFORE I even start to repair it.

This may be a little late to suggest, but wouldn't it have been easier to just supply a replacement board instead of making users either repair the board themselves or return the extender along with $30?

So now I just need to find a RS in town that actually has these capacitors in stock!

My HD100-RIP.
From the original shipment it finally bit the dust. Told the wife we need to order a new HD200. I'll repair it after I "discover" this thread. "Oh look Hon. I might be able to fix it."

I consider myself lucky when she "discovers" the correct button on the remote. She's really not a forum gal.

Were some HD100's no susceptible to the capacitor problem? I opened mine the other day as I was replacing it with an HD200 and the capacitors were not raised at all. I was shocked. I even ordered the capacitors waiting for the day when it stopped working. I was very surprised. I use the box for several hours a day for the kids watching shows.

Just wondering, thanks,

Neil

The "bad" capacitors seem to be from all shipments. With that said, I have 2 from February 2008 and 1 from August 2008 and all are still working fine. I have replaced the caps in one of mine just to make sure I could, but the caps were not bulging when I did it. 1 of my HD100's are used for 4+ hours a day and another is used for 2+ hours per day. Based on the posts in this thread and others, I don't think the usage really has much to do with it.

Well... Couldn't find a RS in town that had a single capacitor but my wife managed to grab 5 at the RS 50 minutes away near where she works.

Fixed both extenders and they appear to be working great.

Kids are finally happy, the sun is shining, and the birds are singing!!!

Well - add one of mine to the list of dead HD100's. Went to watch a little TV this evening - but found the blinking red light. It was from the second batch of the first revision (horizontal buttons). Ordered 12/2007. Guess I'll be going to Radio Shack tomorrow at lunch. I'll go ahead and get enough to repair the other HD100 as well - just in case. Ordered that one 05/2008 - first batch of the second version (slanted buttons), I believe.

Add one of my HD-100's to the list, bought in May 2008. Suprisingly I hardly use this box and the one that runs my main TV is working fine. I think I'm going to try the dlink PS fix instead of the capacitors, no one has them in stock anywhere in town. I don't think I want to ship it back into the US, shipping stuff from Canada sucks.

And my second HD-100 just failed as well. WOW! Glad I ordered all 6 caps at the same time.

My HD power supply capacitors are bulged. The pad on the underside of the board on one of the capacitors has lifted, it is very sturdy right now, so it seems that it was done during the manufacturing process. Should I be concerned about this pad lifting or will it be OK to desolder/solder?

As long as you can solder onto the trace you should be fine. After desoldering you could crazy glue it down to the board so it doesn't pull away.

after desoldering it is still attached on one side. I think I can get it solder so we will see, caps are supposed to arrive today so I'll know shortly if it works or not. If it doesn't work I'll have to track down an alternative power supply.

My HD100 died and thanks you this post I repaired it as well.

Radio Shack is extinct in Canada, as it used to be. I picked up the capacitors at Active Surplus in Toronto.

So for my HD100 I found an old wall wart for a Dell Axim PDA which met the specs and worked perfectly after I wired it in.

another one bies the dust!

My first hd100 just died. Caps look like crap and need to be replaced. I better place an order for 15 caps because I am sure my other 4 will probably die soon.

We have all been plagued. First it was the swine H1N1 flew and now its the HD100 flew. I need the HD100 vacine! hahahaha!

I just had my second one die in a month. Not too happy, but I guess it isn't too much to fix...oh well.
