SageTV HD-PVR & ATSC OTA recordings - Can I play them on other players?

Can I playback a SageTV ATSC OTA recording or one made via the HD-PVR in another player such as Cyberlink PowerDVD or BTV?

I could get a picture just fine with PowerDVD but no sound. I know with BTV they use their own proprietary file extension, but even when I changed that I did not get sound either.

Any help is appreciated.

i havent tried specifically but i would think it shouldnt be a problem... The HD-PVR is just an H264 video stream and an ac3 audio stream in a .ts container. Likewise my guess is that the ATSC OTA recordings are mpeg2 and ac3 in an .mpg container. So i would think BTV and PowerDVD should have no problem playing them. Do they play in WMP or VLC or mplayer? Since youre having a problem with the audio i assume it is an ac3 thing.... make sure you have that installed and working properly... search for ac3filter... i believe sage by default uses its own ac3 decoder which is why it works there... Also, they should play in VLC and mplayer because they use their own ac3 decoders as well.

Why do you want to playback your recordings in those applications?

Yeah. maybe this is an audio decoder issue.

I want to be able to cross-play them because I have a library on BTV but Sage is totally stable with the HD-PVR

Of course, the reciprocal holds as well - I'd like to be able to play a bunch of HD-PVR movies I recorded under BTV but I can't get Sage to recognize them either.

Ah well, life goes on.

I don’t use/never used Beyond but couldn’t you batch encode your files with something like handbrake and import the files into sage…

When I went from Beyond to Sage, I renamed the HD PVR files as .ts rather than .tp and Sage played them without a problem. If Beyond is still useing the .tp extension??

First, I don't know about handbrake. I will look into that.

Second, I figured just renaming the extension would take care of the issues, but SageTV ignores BTV files thus renamed.

And SageTV files only play video, not audio, on anything I try them on.

Just don't know.

If they are older (HD-PVR) files that were recorded with RCA Stereo, you may need a codec that provides support for AAC audio.

Yeah, that's probably it. All my stuff is in 2-channel not AC3.

Thanks.

You all were dead-on. Once I went into TME and told the HD-PVR to go back to AC3 all was well with the sound.

Thanks !!!!
