There is nothing "proprietary" about the EXIF date embedded in the picture by all cameras. Any basic program can read this. You have to be careful with keyword tags and captions so you need to use a program that uses the standard tags to write these to the files like Windows Live Photo Gallery and JRMC.

All my photos don't have EXIF data, or relevant data. Some are scans too.

+1 for Lightroom. It is by far the best if you are willing to spend money but it needs a decent computer to run.

If you don't want to spend money then you can't really beat Picasa.

For my online photo/video sharing I really love SmugMug. I also quite like Zenfolio. Picasa Web Albums facial recognition feature is pretty cool, I just wish they had some themes and better customization of the albums. If you plan on getting a ton of prints Fotki's print pricing is amazing but their we interface isn't as advanced as the aforementioned.

If you use Lightroom there are some export plugins made by Jeffrey Friedl that make it extremely easy to upload to SmugMug, Zenfolio, Picasa web, Facebook and Flickr.
