You should have formatted it in 64k blocks, not 8k blocks.

I plugged a WD 1TB drive into my powered Icy Dock USB Drive Enclosure. Formatted it NTSF 8K blocks and copied two movies to it (a BluRay "Fast and Furious" and a regular DVD "Bolt").

Hooked the USB drive to the back port of the HD200 and added the movies to the Directory Imports.

Tried playing "Bolt" and it played fine. Then tried "Fast and Furious" and I had the choppy playback problem again. The movie would pause about every 15 seconds or so for about a second or less and then continue playback for another 15 seconds or so. It made viewing the movie unwatchable.

I tried the same thing with the front USB port and got the same results.

I then plugged the USB drive into my NAS drive server and added the movies to the Directory Imports on the HD200 (stand alone mode).

From the NAS server over my LAN, I was able to play both movies on the HD200 (in standalone mode) just fine.

So I conclude the problem is not a USB port power problem. But I'm not sure what to conclude about what is causing the problem. It seems to me like some sort of buffering problem just by the way it's playing back when connected to the HD200 USB port.

It's just plain weird that I can get better performance by playing the movie over the LAN than when connected directly to the box.

Are there any buffer settings that can be set on HD200? My guess is no.
I don't know of any buffer settings though I agree it is a good guess that increased buffering could help. I'm not that surprised about the LAN. The solutions I see tossed about usually suggest that disk IO is a normal bottleneck. Buffering itself would just be another way to mitigate that.

When I was choosing between NTFS and ext3, I wondered if they would have different performance characteristics. I chose ext3 because I could write over the network to an attached external hard drive using it, but the pause problem you are having suggests that it might be a better overall option for attaching directly to the HD200 in standalone.

I can't really say that formatting in Ext3 would fix your problem, but it is the only thing I would have left to try if I were in your shoes(if it were codec related I wouldn't have a chance). Support really does help people with these types of problems as well if you haven't gone that route yet. People have given the impression that some of the firmware fixes that have been released were related to specific file problems they were working with support on.

Thanks for the reply.

This is not a mission critical problem for me, so I probably won't escalate it to support for now.

I'm just happy that there is at least a configuration that will let me play my movies. Using SageTv so far has been a pain to use, trying to figure out how to get things working properly. I've lost count how many times I've power plug rebooted the box.

But I have to say, when it does work, it works really well with my 52" Samsung 1080/24p 120Hz TV and Bose stereo system. So it keeps me plugging away.

I guess I was more trying to understand what the HD200 can and cannot do and was wondering if anyone else is using it to play BluRay hi-res movies or not. I get the sense that because of the legacy of the product (i.e. Sage "TV"), that most people are still using it with lower res content.

It would be nice to know if there was anyone using the HD200 like I'm trying to, in order to validate if there are current limitations with the box or if I'm just not doing something right.

Regards

Why can't sage release a firmware update to fix this issue.
