Overriding a locked encoder

OK, so the wife leaves one of the machines watching a program (or in the main menu) and goes off somewhere, and you decide to change channel from another machine, but you get the "all encoders are in use" message...

Is there any way to override this currently, short of going to the machine in question and putting it to sleep, or doing a remote login?

Cheers,

- Neil.

I don't think so. If you only have one tuner in your server this will come up. The first one (client or server) to watch a program owns the tuner. You will need to sleep the one who has control so the other one can use it. I made sure to put 2 tuners in my Sage server so I almost never have this problem. You'll also run across this if your Favorite is recording and then you use your client at the same time. You'll only be able to watch what is recording or something already recorded.

What a good reason to add a 2nd encoder...

Thanks... No, really, your sympathy is overwhelming.

Seriously though, surely they could add an override of some sort? Even one you can disable if you don't want the kids messing up your recordings.

What would be nice is on the client you change the channel and get a dialog that says "wait" and on a server a dialog comes up says "Client 1 wants to change channel. OK?" And after a specified timeout if "OK" isn't clicked it would just change channel. If someone on the server clicks "OK" dialog comes back on the client that says "Channel change refused". That would be cool.

If I recall correctly, doesn't it lock out channel changes from both systems once they are both watching LiveTV through a single tuner? If so, another possibility would be that whichever machine started watching first has priority & can change the channel. (Unless it already does that...)

I don't know that I would wnat a dialog to pop up every time someone on the other system wants to change the channel... I can see that getting abused unless there were 3 possible responses: OK, NO, NEVER. What teenager wouldn't love to bug the parentswith constant requests to change the channel!?

Seriously about the second encoder idea. I found that having 2 encoders has been just absolutely awesome. I plan to add a third when I can afford another PVR-350. I will set it up as a network encoder though and use the tvout for the client.

I have to agree with the second tuner. I have 2 and have very rarely came across this. I think once I had a couple of favorites going and the wife needed something recorded so both tuners were recording at the same time. I have another tuner but I'm using it in my testing PC. One of these days....it will move.
