How To Confirm 64-K Blocks?
Rebuilding my WHS box.
Just added six drives to the pool and then immediately re-formatted them to have 64-k blocks. Now I would like to check and make sure I didn't fat-finger anything, but don't see anywhere that the system tells me the block size. A command? Utility?

in the same area where you would defrag. something like computer services, disk management, look for analyze, then view the report.
don't defrag though, just analyze. bad stuff happens on whs with defragging, or so I've read.

or go to a command prompt on your D drive (for WHS) and type chkdsk. When it is done look for the "bytes in each allocation unit listing" towards the end. It should be 65535. To check each drive in the pool individually you need to go to C:\fs and then change into each directory which represents a drive letter. (for example F, J, L, V, etc) and run chkdsk from that directory.

SIW
http://www.gtopala.com/ Very useful freeware utility will tell you that and just about anything else you might want to know about your system. For the information you're looking for click "logical disks" and then click on the drive in question. |

Everything you always wanted to know about your system and about five hundred things you never dreamed of.... -) And on one of my discs, "Disk Management" says the serial number is "Unknown"..... Yet SIW shows a plausible-looking SN. Thanks.

Acronis Disk Director
shows all detail, including cluster size. It will change cluster size retroactively, too. |
