editing out commercials?

If I cut out the commercials of a recorded program, how do I retain the unique ID of that show so that SageTV knows not to record it again?

I was wondering the same thing, but I think the entry in the database has to do with size as well, because you can't just rename a file to match. Since when you edit the commercials out, the file gets smaller, I doubt you could make it stay listed as a recorded program.

I really wish that SAGETV utilized a sql database instead of a proprietary one so that modifications of this sort could be made. Then, all kinds of modifications could be made for SAGETV to handle all kinds of things from scheduling to editing of commercials automagically.

Well I did a little digging around and found you could just set the episode as watched in the upcoming recordings or guide.
As for the automatic editing out of commecials, I have just stopped using BeyondTV, but they have a feature called smartskip, that is suppose to put points at commercials and someone wrote a program to take advantage of it and auto cut them out of the file. The smartskip feature is too unreliable to use at this point. Around 45% accuracy. I was wondering if SageTV has a similair feature in the works?

Based on what I can find in the threads, it's not anywhere near the top of the list, and perhaps may not even be on the list of things to do. I can kinda see why too, they don't want to get their pants sued off. *SHRUG*

i agree

from what I read on BTV about it, it will never be reliable enough anyways. Some shows do not have a black screen between sequence of show and commercials, so NO program could accurately detect the scene change. It could work for some however, I am sure it would cause more harm than good...
I would rather see the dev team work towards something more benificial

I usually make a copy of the original recording, edit it and then save the shorten copy over the original recording. If you remove or delete the original recording SageTV will lose track of it.

The length of the show is a minor issue. If a hour long show is shortened to something like 45 minutes, then the Sage timeline will still show it as being 1 long. Therefore, the timeline will become only a reference to how far into the program you are and not an actual time indicator.

Another appoach I use mostly for archiving purposes, is to save the edited file on some other disk. I then replace the originally show with a 2 second (dummy clip) just as a placeholder, so SageTV retains all known information concerning the show.

so, SageTV doesn't put anything in the header of the mpg file? It uses the file name? If so, how would it retain the details of the show?

I believe all the details are kept in the wiz.bin file.

Not that I am aware of. I doubt it would even be possible to successfully execute such a thing. You can adjust the time of the fast forward button to more time which can help skip through commercials. I actually have two buttons - a 10 second skip and a 30 second skip. The combo gets me through commercials in a matter of a couple of seconds which out missing much programming.
