I am not sure, but I would think you can.
If you are running SageTV as a normal user (not service mode) you should be able to open the Java Control Panel applet. On the main "General" tab, there is a button for Network settings. You can specify a proxy there and probably check "bypass for local addresses" box. This would probably use the proxy for all external connections including guide updates, etc - not just the Online Services portion. Not sure if sage will use this info, but I would think it would.

Just got a reply from SageTV support. Unfortunatly SageTV does not support using a HTTP Proxy.

Depending on how determined you are, you can still proxy non-proxy aware applications. Is your proxy HTTP 1.1 compliant or socks v4/5 ?
There are a few applications like this, but the one I use is ProxyCap - It transparently tunnel 'normal' connections through your proxy. I use it with a SSH tunnel to tunnels Remote Desktop through a remote machine. (Client PC (with proxycap) has SSH client that emulates a SOCKS 5 proxy)
