crackling / static on the right audio channel

Hello there,

I'm not sure in which forum to post this, so I thought I'd try here.

On some shows, I'm getting a "fried" or crackly sound in the audio on the right channel. I do not get this when watching DVDs or ripped DVDs or listening to music through Sage. It is consistent watching through my MVPs or HD Theater or Placeshifter.

For example, I recorded "Planet Earth" on the Discovery Channel in Dec 2009 and the recordings exhibit this static. If I copy the file to a local computer and watch if on that computer, I get the static as well.

If I watch live TV though, I don't recall getting this effect. But, we watch live TV perhaps once a year, so I can't really comment. If I watch live TV right now as I type this and flip through the channels, I cannot reproduce it.

If I watch a recent recording of Mythbusters, also on Discovery, I do not get this effect.

It doesn't happen through all shows. I recall it happening on Battlestar Galactica very frequently.

I have a comcast motorola cable box hooked up to a PVR-150 making SD recordings. I believe that I have the cable box set to low or no audio compression.

Has anyone else come across this issue? If so, how have you solved it?

I notice the crackle on the latest episode of Stargate Universe, but do not hear it while watching live TV on Syfy.

Does anyone have any ideas?
