I just got the donator version of comskip. Am I correct that I need to put the new version in an alternate folder and point commercial dector to the new .exe and leave the .ini location alone?

You can just drop it and overwrite the exe that's in the current location.

That isn't recommended, because updates to Commercial Detector in the future might overwrite them again with a newer non-donator's version. You basically shouldn't ever mess with/alter file installed BY the plugin system, as they are always changeable again by the plugin system.

I had read that overwriting the existing .exe was a no-no. I'll just point it to the new .exe and all should be well. I'll find out at least.

I searched and this is where the discussion was. Comskip playback won't work if it doesn't scan h.264 files.

He was just being a pain. Technically, this is a CommercialDetector question.

I have commercial detector working on the server. It works great!

I have two extenders (HD200 and HD300), and was forced to fire up an old PC client (because another HD300 is unavailable for me to purchase , but I would in a heartbeat if anyone wants to sell me one at $200 or less).

Anyway, all clients have Comskip Playback 2.0.9 installed, and it works great on the extenders. The client PC does not, and I cannot figure out why.

The settings tab is in the Detailed Setup > Customize menu, and appear correct, but the CS icon doesn't show up on the top, nor for any shows which I know to have .edl files associated.

Any clues where to look?

Make sure the recording paths are identical to the server. I'm not sure if you have to use all UNC paths or all mapped paths but they need to be identical.

UNC (\\Server\RecordingsFolderShare) or Mapped Drives (M:\RecordingsFolder) would both work. Like mentioned, the client looks at the path that sage sees for the recording, so if the server sees the recording as \\Server\RecordingsFolderShare\Recording.mpg, then the client MUST be able to access \\Server\RecordingsFolderShare\Recording.txt directly.

Ok... tried this both ways, and still no luck. To explain my setup further, I have a WHS server, with a separate physical disk outside of the drive pool (G:\sage) which stores all recordings.

I have a single recording directory at: \\sageserver\sage (I also tried to map G:\sage on the client, but results were the same.)

Do I need to point comskip playback at this somehow? This is already listed under Detailed Settings>General>Video Recording Directories... is there somewhere else I need to point to this?

I can access the folder and files without issue using windows explorer on the client machine.

When I change the recordings directory on the server it seems to automatically change it on the client also. Is that normal?

I also have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the CommercialDetector UI Mod, with similar results. The "CS" button shows up at the top of the screen now, but still nothing for shows that I verify have .edl files associated.

Still scratching my head on this one. I had this working at one time... not sure how I screwed it up.

Pick a show that you know you have an edl for, check the details, and see what the path is for that show. Then, from the client, navigating to that path in explorer.

I have done that. I can access the .edl file through both a unc path or a mapped network drive from the client machine.

I have verified that the file name under the "detailed info" shows G:\sage\<showname>.ts, and can access G:\sage\<showname>.edl in explorer from the client... (the recording directory is also G:\sage, verified on both the client and server)

There's gotta be something I am missing or have set up incorrectly.

You've probably already tried, but I remember once in the v6 days, I had a similar problem, but after some combination of an uninstall/reinstall/server restart it started working...

Is there anything IN the .edl file?

Yeah, opening it with notepad shows me the sets of numbers indicating commercials...

this DOES work with both of my extenders.

I am suspecting some kind of rebooting/installing thing as Karyl suggests, and thought I did... but when I have time, I will try that again more systematically.

It will have nothing to do with the server. comskip playback exists solely on the client itself. If anything, I'd uninstall the comskip playback UI Mod, and reinstall it. That really should be all it takes, if the files are accessible as you say.
