Angry IR is killing my hard drive :(

Hey guys, You all have been great as I learn SageTV (beta). Of course I love it but now the Inteligent Recording is killing my drive.
I travel and I am out for two to four days so I don't want to turn it off all together and I read that there is a bug that keeps recording even if asleep. Can someone tell me if there si a temp fix or a work around. I go to the office some days and work 16 hours I come home and I have 16 hours of recorded crap.
My drive started making this winding noice and won't stop. It's end is near. RC please!!!! For the sake of our drive RC!
anyway, words of wisdow will be ever so appreciated.
Brian

IR will always record shows for you even if Sage is asleep. This is not a bug and is how it always and will always work. You can disable IR in Detailed Setup.

Get a better HD . My dual 160's have gone 24x7 for the last year and are still chugging along.

Maybe my drive is defective... Well may you can help with this. When IR records a show and I don't like it do I select "Don't Like" and then delete it? That is what I do and the same stuff just keeps getting recorded. I am so sick of the local news and Judging Amy.
Thanks for the help,
Brian

Something is wrong with your drive. My Tivo has been recording continuously for almost 4 years with not adverse effects.

I don't use IR, but its goal is probably to away keep you drive full of shows it thinks you might want to watch, so if you keep deleteing everything it records, there is plenty of room for it to record more shows. If your drive were full it would be more selective about recording more shows. SageTV will delete IR recordings to make room for your shows, so that won't cause a problem.

I figured that it was clearing shows for my shows because I would come home from a 4 day trip amd the drive was near full and all "My shows" were there so I figured it must remove shows to make room for mine.
I will wait to see if the drive smokes then replace.
Do we know if there is any plan to ever make SageTV run on Linux?

There have been requests to have the client ported to both Linux and MacOS X (guess which one I asked for ). I can see problem with porting the server to Linux being the maturity of device drivers. Being written in Java helps the portability, though.

It is _supposed_ to stop recording something when you say that you don't like it & it isn't marked as 'watched' ('watched' tells it that you _do_ like it). I keep getting recurring shows that I don't like too, so it seems to take a while to catch on to some shows. One thing to try in order to get it to believe the don't like setting: go to the show's detail info screen, view the Additional Airings, & mark all those as don't like.

Thanks I did not think about that. I've used addtional airings but that is another good way to use it. I will try that.
I wish they had a way for us to weigh the show.
don't like it 1 is not so much
don't like it 5 is RED HOT HATE IT

oh well...

I've messed around with IR in the past, but found it more hassle than it is worth.

I do not watch much live TV on Sage. I mostly use it as a recorder. But, if ever I was working in Sage and had a TV show on, even briefly, the software would add it to the IR list. Usually this was something I didn't care to watch. Then I got a bunch of stuff I did not care to watch.

I find the Favorites Manager a much better route. I end up with so much programming that frankly I don't have time to watch just the Favorites stuff that is recorded.

Yeah..I have the same problem. "Don't Like" seems pretty useless. Also I wish that when you had auto catagorize turned on, it would put IR shows in an IR folder instead of mixing them with your favorites.

I had had to set Don't like on several episodes of a series before Sage gets the idea...
What I do is every so often, look at the recording schedule and pre-emptively set don't like on all the episodes scheduled to record.

I suspect that each time you watch something (even partially) it increases the 'score' of that program. Setting Don't like decreases the 'score'.
IR records those programs with a score that is higher than a certain threshold...
It also appears to take into account channel and category as well as programme name... (IR now records all films on 2 channels that I regularly watch, which is fairly sensible of it!)

I've noted before that whatever 'intelligence' SageTV uses seems to cause it to continually suggest certain shows -- I had to remote Lifetime from my channel list & it still tries to record General Hospital & One Life to Live. Sometimes it feels like I'm stuck in Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham. So, my conversation with Sam IR Am goes like:

Would you like to watch this show in March or May? Say, maybe you would like it this coming Tuesday? I would not watch it in March or May. I will not like it this coming Tuesday. I will not watch it this month or that. I do not like the show ANY DAY!

Uh... sorry... must have been reading too many stories for my kids....

I requested a feature for V2 to be able to edit (or just RESET) what the IR system thinks I have watched... The only other way is to delete wiz.* (which destroys so much other info, I have not yet considered it worth it)...

I forgot to put sage to sleep last night, which meant that it recorded and watched a whole load of nighttime TV, morning kids shows, and daytime cookery shows for me... Guaranteed to screw up IR... I went back through the recordings doing 'clear watched, set don't like, delete', I hope it will work!

Every so often I set the Sage.Property clear_all_watched (or something like that) to true and start Sage to clear it out so that I can re-record some favorite repeats.

wizard/clearwatched=true so thats what that does
(5 minutes later)
Although on V2RC2 it also deletes all favourites ... Is that intentional?!

Any idea what wizard/clearprofile=false does?

(goes off to restore backup wiz file!)

I am just not a fan of this feature.

One thing I would like to see in the Favorites area, though, would be to have an active "search" for shows of a certain type. For example, I'd like to record Charlie Chan movies when they are on. Right now, none are scheduled and so I can not add them to Favorites (at least in V2 - can't remember how this was in 1.4).

I know I just post this elsewhere, but it seemed germaine to this conversation.

Good thing I have not done this in a couple of months. I will submit a bug on that.

In contrast to the other accounts, IR works great for me, it records about 4 or 5 shows a day, usually they pretty good, stuff I might set as a favorite if IR didn't catch them.

The leave for 16 hours, have 16 hours of shows sounds like SageTV was left in LiveTV mode, if so it will continue to record until you stop it. This is not a part of IR (although it will affect it). You need to put Sage to sleep whey you are not using it.

Oh yeah... I keep forgetting to make it clear that if all IR did for me was suggest junk, I would have turned it off long ago. It is mostly a case of: I like they way it works, I just wish it was better at ignoring what I tell it not to record. It works great for most of the kids shows I record & it works better that way than using favorites for all the shows, since this way there are almost no conflicts to check out.

I also fully realize that some of my complaints about it may be related to the fact that I never allow it to fill my drives. Maybe IR would record fewer shows if it had to delete one to make room for a new show -- perhaps it would only do that if the new show was ranked higher than an existing one? Anyway, I want to control what gets kept & what gets deleted, so I never let it get that far.

Nope. I let it fill my drives and it still records CNN/ESPN News/MSNBC all day while in sleep mode.
