HD200 will not connect to server, Sage BSOD (Black Screen Of Death)

Background:

I've had an HD200 for at least a year now and it worked decent in stand-alone mode. Decided to build a server finally and evaluate the SageTV server software for DVR, etc... functions.

I built the box (Win7 Pro and latest Sage sever beta) and configured the HD200 to access it. If I remember correctly it would not "discover" the sage server so I had to add it manually. It would not "auto connect" either, I would have to manually select the server after the HD200 booted.

Everything seemed ok (maybe for a day) and then the next time I wanted to use the server functionality on the HD200, I would select the server and then where the splash screen would display it came up a blank screen (i.e. "no input") on the TV screen. Powering off and on the HD200 would show the boot / stand-alone menu. Selecting the server again would result in a black screen.

Things I've tried:
1. Force HDMI (on / off)
2. Removing the client files (which don't seem to regenerate now on the server side)
3. Firewall off on server
4. Rebooted server, switch and HD200 multiple times including power off and hold down delete HD200 resets
5. HD200 and server are on the same switch
6. Flashed to production version
7. Flashed to beta version
8. HD200 pulls data from the NAS on the network with no issues
9. Video out button

depending on your version of the server you are using, you will need to use the associated hd200 beta firmware to match.

also when connecting to the server it may take aa few moments to actually do the connection. if you use the video output (i think it what it is called) on your hd200 remote it will switch between the different device outputs...again make sure you give it time to actually switch and put out to the tv ... prolly 10 seconds or so.

also are you running in service mode on the server?

I think originally I was on the production HD200 flash and that didn't work so I moved over to the HD200 beta flash (20100909 0) to match up with the Sage 7 beta (.16).

Not 100% I've waited 10 secs on each Video Out button push but I'll check again tonight. Was running in server mode and then went to client mode and recently tried server mode again. Client app currently is set to not be a server.

Also to complicate things I've installed the HD-PVR (which is the purpose of having a sage server). Still trying to validate capture stability (via the sage server side client) but have to say that the current release of HD-PVR drivers are complete garbage (lockups / capture errors from hell). Had to roll it back to the 1.0.5 version to get it functional at all.

Overall I can see the light but the path there seems more difficult than necessary given it's software and hardware from the same vendor. Maybe it's the beta I'm trying that makes it so much more painful. I know the HD-PVR issues are not Sage's.

Didn't have a chance to check the video button lag response last night. Should be able to check it tonight but if it doesn't work should I be putting in a bug at this point?

My HD300 should be coming in soon so that may help isolate the issue.

Submitted a bug with this topic as a reference. Looks like I won't be buying any software until this can get resolved since I'm on the eval license.

Looks like I need the SageTV client running with the Sage Server settings set to Enabled, even though it was supposed to be running in service mode per the service manager.

That seems rather odd... What am I missing here?

I'm working with Sage on this but wanted to post an update for those that may be have this issue.

1. The sagetv client on the server itself had the server set to disabled, even though the sagetvservice was showing it running.

2. I couldn't use the host name to connect from the hd200/300 to the server because it doesn't resolve (even from my windows vista box) which is odd considering it "should" at least try to broadcast to locate the machine but doesn't seem to do that (not configured for hybrid mode netbios type?). So direct IP fixed that specific issue.

3. Now that it's working, I replaced the HD200 with my new HD300 and watching recorded shows has pauses with .16 and the latest firmware for the 300 unit. Switched back to the 200 and it was solid as a rock.

So now I have general questions since I think it's supposed to run as a service (i.e. sagetvservice.exe) but instead I see sagetv.exe running and beyond that I have multiple instances (2 sagetvservice.exe, one of which is using very little memory) and (2 sagetv.exe processes, one of which is using very little memory). In addition, all of the processes are showing under the administrator user context when the "service" is setup to login as the System account.

Overall the HD-PVR with the older drivers has been VERY stable. The latest drivers were absolutely garbage!


I'll start another topic on the next issue but... is it not possible to show error messages on the screen (i.e. can't connect to sage server) vs. a blank screen? That doesn't seem to make much sense. All this code on the extender unit and no real error trapping?
