playback lip sync problem with PVR-350

I'm trying to cure a lip sync problem with my PVR-350. It ocurrs all the time. I'm using the Intervideo codec that came with the Hauppauge card.

The lip sync is cured by ff'ing or rw'ing.

I thought I remember some discussion about how to cure this problem with both the 250 and 350 Hauppauge cards, but I can't find the thread(s). I vaguely remember it having to do with cleaning up the installation of the drivers and such.

Does anyone have the specifics on the procedure on how to cure this problem?

Thanks.

John,

Have you been using the same PC all along for SageTV?

Think there's something wrong with your PC in general? You do seem to have a lot of weird problems relative to others, and I don't think it's user error on your part.

It all works. There's just this lip sync problem. I've always had it with the Hauppauge card. I never had lip sync issues with the Provideo card. Plus the sync comes right in when I ff or rw.

I don't know. Putting together another computer right now is out of the question for the moment.

I was having some problems with AV sync too. It started after I selected to use Dscaler and Double Refresh with the Elecard decoder under the SageTV video settings.

Turning off Dscaler and Double Refresh my sync problems went away.

I expect a faster CPU would have worked okay, the installed CPU is a 1.4GHz Athlon T-Bird. I may replace it with a spare 2GHz Athlon XP sometime soon.

sshapiro63,

Your sync issue is related to using Dscaler with Double Refresh Rate. It takes a more powerful PC to handle the processing. I have a 1.4Ghz Athlon and experience the same problems with Double Refresh Rate.

John - do you have any other codecs you can try? I've found the Intervideo filters that come with the 350 to be almost as bad as the Cyberlink ones that came with the provideo card. Right now, I've been going back and forth between the Intervideo filters from WinDVD 4.0 and the Ravisent filters from ATI DVD player 7.6. Both give me a really good picture on my 51" HDTV and perfect sound sync.

I switched from using the Ravisent filters to the Hauppauge Intervideo filters because I was getting SageTV freeze-up during ff'ing and rw'ing. The solution was to switch. That cured the freeze-ups, but the lip sync is very apparent.

In fact, from memory, the lip sync issue was around with the Ravisent filters as well before I switched, but I'll have to go back and try the combinations again and re-verify that. The lip sync issue started when I started using the PVR350, and I switched after that to eliminate the freeze-ups.

Do you think the new filters in the MMC8.1 package from ATI would be worth investigating? I can pickup that cd from ATI for $10.

I have no idea, John. ATI is now using Cyberlink filters (7.6 was the last version that used Ravisent), and I've never been impressed with the cyberlink ones. This is wierd, as I don't see any lip sync problems with my 350 and Sage using either the Ravisent or Windvd 4.0 Intervideo filters. And no freezes or lockups either.

I'd go look at it right now again just to be sure, but I'm in the middle of testing something else with SageTV and don't have it configured currently for my 350 card.

And I think many will like that test you're running....

John, give the MPEG Audio Decoder a try. That's what I've ended up with. I used to use the Intervideo Audio Decoder, but about 5% of the time the audio would be muted after a ff/rew due to some bug in their filter. No problems at all using the default MS supplied MPEG Audio Decoder.

I don't know what to say. It seems like every combination yields lip sync issues. The only filter to not have the intermittant freeze ups with ff'ing and rw'ing is the Hauppauge DSS one. I tried all the different and audio filters I had available, all to no avail.

The only other thing I can think of is I think the rest of you are using a separate sound card while I am using the onboard Creative sound on this Gigabyte motherboard. Maybe that's what's causing the problem.

Like I said before, the sync issue is perfectly cleared up after ff'ing or rw'ing at the beginning. The sync stays throughout the show(s). The lip sync is much less of an issue obviously than having to deal with the freeze-ups.

That wouldn't by chance be SB16 or 1370/71 would it John?
Just so you know that ES1370/1371 are aka Ensoniq Audio PCI64/128 or aka SoundBlaster 64/128.

I'm not sure, I would have to check the MB specs.

But, I've kept messing with everything tonight and all the sudden the delay of audio on video startup disappeared and the lip sync problem went away as well.

I’m now using the InterVideo NonCSS from Hauppauge and the MS default Audio decoder. I tried that combo several times tonight, but all the sudden after watching several shows, it just started working great.

Thanks for talking me through all the possibilities.
