OS Drive Questions
Is there a benefit to using a faster hard drive for the OS drive on a server, especially considering the usage of extenders for playback?
I’m not talking about going SSD, but are there performance gains from using say a WD Black drive? The reason I ask is that plugins like SMM, and the new UI’s on the horizon are/probably more demanding, especially in loading more graphics etc. Also, in the mix are heavy hitters like like PlayOn and ComSkip. My current OS drive is a nothing special Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, 320GB, 3Gb/s, 16MB cache drive. I’m considering putting in a Western Digital Black 640GB, 6Gb/s, 64MB cache drive. Do you think there is enough of a reason/performance gain to switch? Thanks for any advice or input you can give me |

I'd have to say that you will notice a slight performance increase in booting/shutting down, but overall you wouldn't notice any difference once you are all booted and doing "real" tasks.
You best best is to save up for a ~80GB SSD and use that as a boot disk and also have a larger drive for media (pics/music/video). Good luck. |
