I don't know what you could build an i3 based server for these days, but I'd guess it'd be in the $300 range + storage. I have an i3 client that i recntly built for 2 something, but it's a mini itx that is far from suitable as a client (no storage space).

I assume you meant server, right?

At any rate, as it happens, most of my drives are External, one eSATA and two USB2.0. Only one, a 1.5TB SATA, is internal. Sure it's not ideal, but if I can save some money while retaining most of the core functionality, I might build a cheapie like your client.
