Placeshifter playback is very choppy

I'm running placeshifter on my laptop. when I play an HD recording it's very choppy and stutters, I've looked and read he manual, but cannot find the best way to clean this up.

Any thoughts?

Let me guess that you're trying to run it on a wireless network at home. In that mode, it doesn't have enough bandwidth to play HD content. There is a thread about how to fool PS into thinking you are using it over the internet and it makes it work great at home.

Are you using a wired or wireless connection? Wireless won't work with HD content. I use the same setup and can watch SD content OK with Placeshifter. When I'm going to stream HD I connect the LAN cable and don't have any problems with stuttering... I'm running Vista SP2

I'm using wired. A gig connection.

How powerful is the laptop? Does it have the horsepower to play what you're throwing at it? If placeshifter sees that you are connected via a local network the server will not transcode the video so the laptop will do all the work. You can override this by tweaking the settings in the placeshifter and force the server to transcode the video to some predetermined bitrate.

That could be my problem. What is the tweak to force the server to do the transcoding?

thanks

When you launch placeshifter click on the machine you want to connect to and then click on "settings". I think that is it, I'm going from memory.

From there you will see a number of tabs and in one of them you can set the transcoding. The default is "dynamic adaptive", change that to a fixed bitrate. You will need to play with it a little to get a value that works the best.

Keep i mind if it's H264 content, it still will not work very well. At least I haven't gotten it to work well. MPEG2 content should work great.

Why is it that H264 content isn't played well by the placeshifter software? If i watch 1080p H264 content by directly opening the file from a share drive, it plays flawlessly but when I play the same file in the placeshifter it studders and freezes every few seconds.

Because placeshifter will transcode it and that takes a massive amount of CPU power.
