I need to pick up a impact style punch down tool. Any specific recommendations?
TIA |

Sorry, no specific recommendation.
I will say I had to buy some keystones and other bits for Ethernet installation recently. I bought from Home Depot / Lowes and Monoprice.com. The Monoprice stuff was much nicer and higher quality (and cheaper). Perhaps they have a good punchdown tool. |

If you're buying one just for a single job such as wiring your house I'd consider a cheaper one from Home Depot or Lowes but if you want a quality tool, buy the Fluke Networks D914.

I bought a Trendnet impact punchdown tool from Newegg for approx. $20 a couple of months ago. Pretty good for the price. I get all my keystone jacks etc. from Monoprice.

It all depends on how much you intend to use it. I've seen some keystone jacks that come with a little plastic thing (it doesn't warrant being named a tool) that would work fine for a jack or two. If you are wiring racks of equipment go for the fluke or the paladin. I had one similar to this when I used to do network and telecom work and I was happy with it. I didn't need it every day, but when I did need to use it I didn't want to end up with hand cramps etc
Once you get away from the little plastic doohickeys that come with the keystone jacks, they will all do the job, some are just more comfortable to use than others. |
