Does FilterBy*() do the filter in place if you don't assign it to anything?
I'm seeing some really odd behavior using FilterByBoolMethod to count number of unwatched videos in a list.
If I print out the count like this... Code:
Size(FilterByBoolMethod(MediaFileList,"IsWatched",true)) +" Watched

Yes, it can filter in-place -- see the docs for the API calls to see what data object types it says are filtered in-place.

Also note that this can happen whether or not you assign it to anything. It's not the method's job to care what you're going to do with the returned value; it just filters according to the parameters passed in.
