SageTV On Main Computer vs. Secondary and Resulting Load?

Hi,

I currently have SageTV 6.6 running on a standalone machine dedicated to my HDTV. It works fine, however, I was looking to move the tuner and software to my main computer, ditch the second computer and replace it with an HD300.

Two main reasons in doing this are 1) to save power use (200W vs. 8W) and 2) to save dealing with the second computer.

The computer this is being moved to would be Win 7 64 bit, 4GB ram, quad core (older quad core, not the ixx ones), and near state of the art video card.

Does anyone have concerns/experience with Sage running as a service in the background, say when recording or playing back, causing slowness or other issues when somebody is using the main machine for something else, such as photo and video editing?

Thanks!

I run sageTVservice or I run Sage Desktop on my main PC, see my signature. I have never had any issues with simultaneously doing video file conversion, comskip commercial detection, TV show recording, internet browsing and my wife watching BD video using either the HD200 or HD300.

I'm stating the obvious here, but anytime you need to reboot the machine for general instability, installation of new software, or whatever, you will need to check and make sure that no shows are currently being recorded prior to rebooting. Either that or risk interrupting a recording or live TV in progress.

It's hard to put a price tag on WAF, for some people it's well worth 192W.

Having to reboot your main PC during live viewing or recordings is not a common need and is easily handled. I have been running various server programs to networked media players on my main PC for 6+ years and can honestly say that it is a rare need. I had just as many actual and potential issues with running a headless server and or an HTPC. WAF in my household is paramount (she who must be obeyed).

I suppose one way to look at it is that my server is my main PC. Something has to be running most of the time, right!

Glad to hear that putting all of your eggs in one basket is working out well for you (couldn't resist the Easter pun!)

Granted I'm running an i7 processor, but I can do all of the following things at the same time:

1.) Have 3 recordings going via 3 different HD-PVRs
2.) Have another recording going via an HD-HR
3.) Watch a DVD via extender in the bedroom
4.) Be transcoding 1 video down to 720p
5.) Be playing DC Universe Online, with no lag or slow down
6.) Be ripping 3 DVDs/Blue-Rays all at the same time.

(Note that I use ethernet through the house to connect this PC).

See my sig for the hardware config, but my guess is that even with an older quad, you'd still be able to do most of that above (and obviously i'm a bit overkill ;-) )

Holy cow! Well, probably nothing to worry about. The only thing missing is we like to listen to AM radio which I stream over the computer, and I wish Sage had that capability built in. I've tried to load and run webfeedencoder with no luck.

Thanks again.
