Someone must be confused.
That post is referring to the beta status of WHS 2011 itself...not SageTV. And the poster is not affiliated with SageTV in any way (aside from being a long-time loyal customer that I've actually met in person).

I just did a VM load of 2011, and the whs version will install, but it looks like the add-on GUI doesn't show up on the WHS dashboard. Not a huge loss, but I'm also not sure if you get the single placeshifter license free with it on 2011. Guess that would be a question for Narflex .

The WHS GUI is coded for V1 of WHS. WHS 2011 is completely different and requires a new set of .net assemblies. That aside SageTV has its own interface to enter the licenses and yes it shows the 1 free placeshift license.

Well, that's good to know. Guess I'll set up a temporary Sage box just for the wife to use for our stored media files, and reload my existing Sage box with 2011 (that's assuming I can get my tuners working under server 2008 r2 which is the base for 2011 WHS). If I can't get the tuners working on 2011, I'll probably just load Win7 and be done with it :P. I don't really use the other features of WHS, mainly just the drive extender and duplication. Don't even use the PC backup that's built into the system.

Well, I built up a WHS 2011 rig with an 8TB raid 5 storage array and began testing.

SageTV
HD PVRs
USB-UIRT
My Movies
AnyDVD (running as a service)
Blue Iris (security cams)

Everything seemed to work nicely until I got to PlayOn (MediaMall). No go. It installed ok but Netflix wouldn't work unless I started PlayOn in user mode and kept the console session open (audio related).

I hope there is a solution to PlayOn otherwise I will be looking to another OS like Windows 7 (x86) so I can continue to use firewire channel changing. It's just that WHS has much better server and client backup functionality.

Cheers.

Are you using the WHS version of Sage or the regular server version?

Also what HD-PVR driver are you using?

Thanks.

The regular version in service mode, not the WHS v1 add in.

HD PVR drivers 1.5.7.0 and USB UIRT (2 zones) for channel changing. NOTE: I use component/analog audio because I watch a lot of live TV and want fast channel changing (delay_to_wait_after_tuning=0) and no lock ups.

Can you explain how you got Sage TV to run as a service on WHS 2011? Also is it necessary to install BDA drivers to enable a Tv card on WHS 2011?

I simply installed SageTV and enabled the service from the SageTV Service Control panel. I don't know about BDA, I use HD PVRs and no problem with that using USB UIRT for channel changes.

I don't have WHS 2011 in regular use yet as there are still many aspects to test.

Hi,

I have recently moved from WHS V1 to WHS 2011.

I installed the standard windows version of sage 7.1.7 along with the windows drivers for the HD Homerun, HD PVR, Colossus and the usbuirt. Everything installed just fine....

It was not long before I got constant errors related to the colossus, some of which crashed the machine. I tried to uninstall and reinstall but this did not help. I tried daily, and then twice daily reboots. This did not help either. I finally just removed the colossus. I have always had good results with the HD PVR, but I am now getting constant error messages and failures to record with it as well as problems with the HD Homerun.

I can't decide if I should just move sage to a Win7 machine or all the way back to XP. The capture device drivers seemed to work very well with WHS V1, so I am tempted to roll all the way back to XP 32bit.

Anyone having good success with Win7 x64 and the hauppauge drivers?

As for BDA support, it is baked into WHS 2011. If you go with SBS 2011 or SBS 2011 essentials then you would have to add the necessary files for BDA support.

Jesse

In WHS 2011 can you backup the OS? This is one of the main reason that I switched my server from WHSv1 to W7 - recovering from a system disk crash goes from an hour or two to several days if you have to reinstall the OS and then read back in several TBs of data drives, not to mention the PIA of reinstalling all hardware devices.

Yes, WHS 2011 automatically does a full image backup of of the OS twice a day. You can bare metal restore in less than 15 minutes. I check this regularly on my WHS 2011 test box and I can tell you the backup strategy on all these server 2008 r2 based products is very good. You need a dedicated drive for the backup, or in my case part of my raid array.

Cheers

Finally got around to fully configuring my WHS 2011 box.

I've got Sage 7.1.8 server running (not the WHS version)
Two HDHomeRun's with the lastest software and firmware
Two Hauppauge HD-PVR's, latest driver, DirecTV boxes hard locked at 720p, optical audio, HTTP channel changing, separate USB busses.
The server also runs iCam, Airvideo, and iTunes full time. Everything seems okay so far.

I might get adventurous and load comskip

Server Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (dual core @ 2.4ghz)
4 Gigs Ram
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard
nVidia 7300GT video card
Sil3132 based two port e-sata card
SuperMicro MV8 8-port sata card
2 WD 1TB Black drives (1 for OS)
5 WD 2TB Green drives for storage (1 for SageTV recordings)
