Question SagaRecorder: Whats the point?

I have not used either programs (awaiting tv card) but, I am confused. If you can watch and record movies using SagaTV, then why would I need to get SagaRecorder? To me in what i have read, it seams like a scaled down version of SagaTV.

It is a scaled down version of SageTV. Not sure what the originally intent was, but use as a network encoder is probably its primary use now. It is more like a vcr and could be very useful for those without access to the EPG data.

If you have SageTV then you only need SageRecorder if you have a tuner in another computer. SageRecorder would then be used as a network encoder.

Is there a How-To on setting up a network encoder? I didn't see a way to do it via the GUI.

What's the big advantage of network encoding, anyhow? Since each hardware card uses like less than 5% of the processor, all the encoders could simply be put into the main machine, couldn't they?

I like that the product is flexible enough to be able to do that, but I'm not sure I see the need.

See the NetworkEncoderSetup.txt document for setup instructions.

For me the only reason to have network encoder was until recently you could not combine a 350 with type 16 250's in the same computer. This issue has now been resolved.

There may be others that still use network encoding with 350 or other cards just so card is close to a TV in another room.

I don't believe there is any advantage to using a network encoder.

See the SageTV Configuration page, where you will find: Setting up Network Encoders.

No, not if you run out of PCI slots or want to use a 350 in a client for its TV out. Edit: Yes, you can use a pvr-usb2 encoder (I do), but they do cost more.

Two main reasons I used a PVR in my HTPC client were IR and additional recorder (via network mode) if the 4PVRs in the Server are busy. There are of course other remote options but it seemed the simplest to implement for my first Server/Client build....

Is there any way to select whether a specific program is to be recorded by the network encoder?

That depends, there's no way to say "Record this program on this tuner" Sage abstracts the recording logistics from the user. That said, there are a couple ways to, nudge, Sage into working a specific way.

1) Encoder merit - you can assign different tuners different merit, that will adjust which tuners Sage uses first. You could set it so Sage used the network encoder first, or last.

2) Lineups - If the tuner has a unique channel lineup, you can enable some channels only on that tuner (disable them on the rest) and Sage will have to use that tuner to record shows on said channels. Of course you can do the opposite as well.
