what if...
before spending hundreds of dollars on USED Ebay HD-XXX extenders (for backup use), is there anything that could be done to SageTV in the future, by its' former or new owners, that would render the HD extenders useless, inoperative or unable to link to (and control) the defunct SageTV software?

Not really, other than no longer providing updates there shouldn't really be anything they can do to prevent them from working as expected. Even if they could I believe doing so would probably violate some consumer protection laws.
