then would it be possible to use the player demux filter rather than Sage's just for fun?

I'd say no, definitely not when watching LiveTV, the filter has a output that I assume is for writing the file in parrallel with the standard outputs.

For other files, (library, previous recordings) maybe, but Jeff would have to change something for it to happen probably.
