Question about this new UI. I know it was noted that it has a new cache system that will be much faster. I was wondering if that also means lower memory utilization? I know Diamond seems to take a lot of memory so I'm curious if Gemstone provides any relief there?

I'll throw in my favorite request just this once, for a widget:

RSS news headlines. Add either a UI-based feed list (like nielm's old version from v6) or even a customizable properties file that you create outside of Sage, where you add the RSS news feeds you like. The widget simply takes the headlines from your feeds and scrolls them (either horizontally like a ticker, or vertically depending on the widget location/orientation). Wouldn't even need to have a way to click in and see the stories, just a scrolling list of headlines, like you see on so many news channels - but the content of which is customizable by you.

Just a thought...

We are working on trying to get the plugin to use as little memory as possible while maintaining the performance we want with the UI. So wherever possible we have made things configurable so if memory is an issue then you can turn some things off.

As well, the new UI can be configured to share some things between Extenders like Menus, so they are only loaded into memory once and all the extenders that use that same menus file will also share the menus in memory so they don't take up extra memory per extender.

But proof will be when we get a few more users testing the system before we know for sure how well all this works.... soon we hope.

Outstanding, the sharing menus part would be a big help to me, I've got 3 x HD300's, 2 HD200's and an HD100 on my system.. I only typically use 3 of those regularly but the savings would add up.

It's just cool to see active development continuing. I sure hope we find out what the future lies for Sage soon... In my humble opinion, it will still be awhile before we know for sure.

Does Diamond NOT have it? I didn't know that (I don't use Diamond). Yeah, if that's not included in Gemstone, I won't be using Gemstone. It's a must-have in my house.

@pjpjpjpj - What UI are you using that has caller ID now?

Is the caller ID plugin a v6 plugin?

I know I'm using it in SageMC. I believe there was a plugin for it in the 6.6 STV. Both done by ShadeBlue. Can't remember if someone ever tried to make it available in 7. I think the guys doing Phoenix did an experimental dabble with it for someone... Remember seeing it mentioned in a thread.

There is this V7 plugin that should run on Sagetv V7 with Gemstone UI Addon (STVi plugin),

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/down...do=file&id=386

by Shadeblue

Gemstone is a UI mod not a full replacement to the Sagetv7 UI like Phoenix is, just a lot of tweaks to the default Sagetv7 UI.

In general most plugins should still work with Gemstone installed. We can't guarantee that everything will work as we had to make decisions along the way as to what to leave compatible or integrate and fix etc after making our changes...

I don't even have a modem to test it, can you even buy those still?

If it does work I'll see about adding a graphics to give it the Gemstone look.

J
