If I recall correctly it has very limited functionality compared to the windows version and not sure it supported the latest 7.x - but you should check / confirm.

The linux version of the server supports 7.x just fine. The only disadvantage I've found is that some windows specific plugins that rely on 3rd party windows apps don't work (eg, playon). However, comskip works just fine. The big advantage of the linux server as compared to Windows is that it never checks for client/placeshifter licenses. I was very surprised when I needed to help a friend register their HD100 with SageTV on windows, since I never needed to do that on linux.

Now, the linux client ("miniclient") sucks, but that doesn't bother me, since I run extenders.

Just an FYI. I does have full functionality and it does support latest 7.x

If you have a Linux license, you should be able to upggrade all the way to v7 for free.

I copied it to completely different hardware when I rebuilt my server and it worked. i don't recally if I had to reactivate it or if I had just copied all the files.

It depends what you mean by "tied to the hardware". The Linux activation process uses the MAC address of one of your server's NICs. When SageTV starts up, it uses that MAC address to determine if your activation is valid. If you upgrade your hardware, you can re-activate a few times (4??).

If you are afraid that SageTV's activation server will be unavailable, you can also write down the MAC address of the NIC in your old server, and impose that MAC address on the new server that you transfer SageTV to. This is a time-honored way to transfer licenses in *nix. I remember prying out socketed EEPROM chips when replacing server motherboards in the early 90s to ensure the MAC address did not change.

This was what I was wondering. Mac can be faked so no problems, just wasn't sure how it was done.
