Is anyone taking a serious look at RaspberryPi?

Wow, thanks for that. I was on the forums for a while when V7 was introduced, but was never aware it was offered free to existing users. There was a big gap in time between when I last checked my setup.

I guess for now, I'm going to create a backup point, and then upgrade it, hopefully without issue.

I would assume there would be no issues using an old HD Extender v100 with V7, right?

well, it wasn't free when it was introduced, that was only a while after the google purchase.

I'd probably go for the first case. The second case is very nice, too bad it costs so much. I could get two Pi's for the price of that case.

True, the only reason I could see getting the aluminum case, is if you were overclocking the Pi, and really hammering it. It has islands that come down and make contact with the chips on the board, along with some heat sink compound, I imagine it helps cool them somewhat. Seems like if you were pushing it that hard, you may want to consider another platform...but it is really nice. I will also probably go with the first case.

Not really - by the time this came out everyone was in survival mode. Add this to the subsequent decision to allow users to resell old licenses it increased the supply of SageTV licenses which may be available if you want to buy another.

Even though I have paid hundreds for multiple SageTV licenses I would hope that they would Open Source Sage and make it free for everyone. But that can't happen as long as Google Fiber is essentially SageTV version 8.

I know the talk of the town on the Raspbmc forums is NFS is king. Its less CPU intensive than SMB, and more robust. I never tried since SMB works great for me.

I have a very hard time justifying anything more than a few bucks for any sandwich type of Pi case.
A friend gave me that very same red case, have the same issues you do with the Pi not being 'held' very well. One option is use rubber bands to help the clips hold onto the Pi a little better. Another option is drill it out and put a screw with a standoff to one of the mounting holes on the Pi. I was going to cheat and just use the bottom half so I could squeak 2 cases out of the one, but I ended up cutting down some plexiglass and the end result I was much happier with due to the height compared to the 'red fire engine' case. Another issue I had with that sexy red case (HA) is the glow it tends to put out from the Pi's LED's. Sides my Pi's home is mounted to the back of the TV's, thus I saw no justification for a flashy (and pricy) case.

FYI here is a template for the Pi if anyone needs.

Far as the home brew case solution, check your local hardware store. Plexiglass or such type products are dog cheap. Best of all they'll even cut it down for you. While you are there, grab a couple long screws and nuts to mount it to the Pi and you are set. If you like even clean up the edges and you have a light weight sandwich case that looks great for less than a few bucks. I also like sandwich type of cases for mounting to the back of the TV allowinf for a clean path for heat. My avg temp now is around 117. When setting up and I had it sitting on my DirecTV STB it was around 130. I believe max temp for the CPU is 150. Do note, I never read about anyone cooking their Pi in a standard environment.

Far as that money is no object case, no GPIO (easy) access, and even though they say it acts as a heat sink, unless they mean it helps trap the heat, I doubt it works to keep the Pi cool. Both issues aside, a case that cost twice as much as what it houses? HA!

The Pi might be a little light on specs. I found the CuBox and might buy it instead. Anyone play with it yet? I believe it can run GeeXboX.

I like the ebay listing as it has keyboles to mount allow you to screw it into something. Maybe not as useful in a HT environment, unless you want to mount it to a TV, but useful in my "server room" for playing around.


One issue that I have found is that the Pi is so small and light that it moves all over the place when you try to insert cables, particularly HDMI cables which tend to be bulkier and heavier.

From my personal experience for general xbmc I prefer the Pivos XS, then the RPi then the Cubox. The Cubox just can't do h264 but the built in IR, spdif, esata, GigE make it more complete. As a NAS I can't get great throughput out of it.

but i am playing with RPi and have 3 now.

one is set up in my car as a squeezebox media server along with a logitech touch, a powered usb hub and a usb hard drive that holds my entire uncompressed 1.5 TB music collection. logitech touch with usb output to meridian explorer DAC, line out to car stereo's AUX in.

my second RPi is running XBMC and is hooked into my home theater system.
haven't played around with that one much yet, except to stream internet video.

my 3rd one is my development tool/toy. my last playtime involved getting it to run as a wireless AP using a $7 wifi usb adapter.........took me a while to get the NAT correct (i messed up the DNS servers) but now it works fine.
I may add wifi to my car system, so that the entire package can go in the glovebox (touch, RPi w/wifi, DAC, usb hub) and use an ipod touch with the squeezebox client to choose the music selection.

it's a great little toy to play with but no capable of all the video formats i've grown used to with the sagehd300.
it is also fun (at least for me) to use linux commands (not the GUI) and see that i remember a little from the days when i did my engineering work on unix machines...............seems like real engineering as opposed to moving a mouse around
