Sage COMPLETELY not working (or close)

Here's an interesting problem. Last night, i came home and found my browser giving a REPEATED error (a solid minute of repeated clicking and there were still more error boxes open). I didnt pay it too much attention (mainly because I had been enjoying libations at a local establishment earlier). This morning i noticed sage was not running (I never exit sage). Upon booting up, all my preferences were in tact but my program data was gone. The episode guide had the correct channels, but with no data, and sage recordings/upcoming favorites was completely blank. No text whatsoever. I figured no bigge, restart sage. No go. So i figure restart computer, still no go.

One more wrinkle. If i let sage run with the wiz.bin it crashed with, it crashes every time after about 2 minutes.

I havent solved this yet, so if anyone has ANY insight, please let me know.

Thanks
Stephen

Is there any chance your cable provider changed the name of the channel lineup? This happened twice to me with Cox. I had to rerun the setup wizard, and pick the new lineup name.

Have you tried deleting or renaming your Frey folder and doing a complete reinstall?

The show data is stored in wiz.bin. Perhaps this got corrupted somehow? SageTV automatically creates a bakcup copy of this file, but in all the starting/restarting, it may have gotten overridden too. Can you undelete an older version? (Which I did at some point last fall when I things got messed up due to drives not being available in v1.4...)

Please don't post the SAME question in 2 forums here. I orginally posted this reply to your other question & have moved it here...

If you delete wiz.bin, you certainly won't get your recordings back, since that is where the show data is stored...

Best you can do is find them in the file system and move them to a Library folder. Sage will then import them into the Library but the meta data will be missing.

Are the files still on the drive? Unless you can restore an older version of wiz.bin, you won't be able to get tham back into the list of "SageTV Recordings". But, you could try adding the directory they are in to the list of Library Import Directories. (You may need to rename the dir so that it doesn't interfere with the Video Directories & then simply recreate an empty Video Directory.) Once imported, all you will see is the show titles; you will not see the extended show info that SageTV would normally display.

I'm curious as to what caused your computer to go into such a corrupted state. It sounds like something happened to your system to make it so unstable that SageTV's wiz.bin was corrupted. Are you overclocking? Do you have a UPS hooked up to your system? Have you chacked your Ram and HD? etc.

You might want to make regular backups of your wiz.bin. If you date them and move them off to another folder then you can restore to the point of your last good wiz.bin. In the future if this sort of thing happens you should make an immediate copy of your Wiz.bin.autobackup. Once Sage restarts it will overwrite the existing copy of wiz.bin.autobackup, so if your wiz.bin is corrupt then your Wiz.bin.autobackup gets corrupted on restart of SageTV. On a stable system this thing shouldn't really happen, but better safe than sorry.

True... fixing your current situation doesn't cover what caused it in the first place. I would certaily check the drive for errors, among other things!

It is very important to make regular (at least daily) backups of wiz and properties. It's inevitiable, that you will eventually need them. I use DataKeeper that comes with DriveImage and configure it to keep daily/weekly/montly archives. Maybe that's overkill, the main thing is to keep at least the previous day's around.

(I also have Raid-1 mirroring, but that doesn't protect against corruption).

Wow, I wonder what you lost one day to be so diligent with your backups.

I would guess wedding photos...that's the only way I could get away with buying that much extra storage and not getting a couple of harsh words from my fiance...

Or maybe the numbers to those swiss bank accounts...
