storage server

hey guys,

I have an older intel 700Mhz Coppermine machine with 512mb of ram and 100mb eth0. I'm wondering if this will be fast enough to use as a storage machine for my main sage machine? I'll be running 4 x 250GB drives...

thx

davey

What is "Coppermine"?

Using hardware encoding, the only problem I can see on older systems is using an older IDE interface that can't keep up with the data throughput as the recordings are being saved.

The cpu speed isn't as important unless you plan to do video playback.... in which case you might need to use a hardware decoder.

Coppermine is class of Pentium 3. There were a few classes of PIII...Katmai, Geyserville (mobile),Coppermine, and Tualatin. From what I can remember, Katmai was the original skew....then as time went there became the main 3, Geyserville for mobiles, Coppermines were used in the desktops and Tualatins in the server boards.

Thanks for the info... I can't see why a p3-700 wouldn't work. I just never remember the code names & wanted to make sure it wasn't equivalent to something much slower.

Yeah I wont be doing any video playback with it. Just storing the files and streaming them over the network. I was also worried about the ide bus not keeping up, guess I'll give it a try! Thanks for the feedback guys.

You can always do what I did -- buy a new IDE controller card. That did wonders for performance on my old system. (OK, so it is still slow... just not as SLOW as it used to be.)
