Open Source subforums?

Adding subforums to the Open Source forum was requested quite a while back, but I wanted to wait to see how things went in terms of topics posted. Now might be a good time to get input on whether to create any new subforums and, if so, which ones.

First, I don't think we need a while slew of subforums to recreate the breakdown in the rest of the forum. All those other sections can stay as they are and can still be used for general issues. I.E.: Just because someone is using the open source version of SageTV doesn't mean all posts have to go in the open source forum, in my opinion. That's the way it was done for all new releases in the past.

And, unless/until a new plugins systems is in use for v9, instead of sharing what is used for v7, I think the v7 customizations forum can be used.

In order to organize things a little bit, how about these possible subforums:
Development (developer discussions)
Downloads (links to various file downloads)
How To (various instructions or links to instructions)

Edit: regarding "How To": I know there is some wiki work going on, so the How To posts could be either posts of how to do something or links to wiki/other info.

The existing forum could be used for general open source issues.

Thoughts?

Andy

Andy, I'm wondering if the "MiniClient" should have a separate sub-forum. There is a lot of activity there, and currently it's all happening in a single Thread

Q

I was thinking of a structure more like below. Feature Requests could be merged with Bugs, but I bet it would cause too much traffic and push some new Feature Requests down the list. FAQ and Download links would be useful as links above the subforums, and below the Open Source Main category.

SageTV Open Source-
--Announcements
--Developers
--Users
--HowTo
--Bugs
--Feature Requests

I like the above list.

A hardware category should also be considered - either as a main category or as subcategory of some of the above.

Maybe projects like this would go under the Development area?

yeah, maybe for now it doesn't need a separate area, "Development" should cover it.

I meant that large projects like that might have their own dev subfourm.

As it is, there already is a Hardware forum. Otherwise you could rationalize a hardware sub-category for Development, Bugs, and Feature Requests without much effort.

But to go with thoughts on the current list as of this posting:
Quote:
Development
Downloads
How To
Other (post your suggestions)
Announcements
Bugs
Feature Requests
Long term I think those are good ideas. Short term, I think Development would be more immediately useful. (Which gives the option for further sub-forums to be created as needed, such as for the Android client as it progresses.)

Announcements, Bugs and Feature Requests could probably exist as a combined entity for the short/medium term, people would just need to [tag] top-level posts accordingly. But that also depends somewhat on the type of announcements that are being envisioned there.

Downloads and How-to are probably short/medium term combined forum options, alternately Announcements could also fit here.

As it stands currently, I think Development should probably be split off sooner rather than later. Most everything else still resides in the "later" camp, as I don't think there is "enough traffic" for them just yet.

That and most bug reports being seen in here currently would likely travel into the Development forum rather than an actual Bug Reports forum, as most of them involve projects that haven't hit "stable" just yet. Feature requests are likely to try moving into a Dev forum as well, Mods should be on the lookout.

I'm probably going to create a few subforums sooner, rather than later, and will most likely stick to the few I initially mentioned, but with a 'clients' subforum added to the dev forum.

Most of the other topics can probably fit in the main open source forum. If I create a subforum for each possible section, I'm just going to find myself moving a lot of posts.

I probably need to also finally look into the topic prefix tags that I think the forum supports.
