HD-PVR 2 that works with HD300 and Live TV?

Just found out that my television provider (Shaw Direct) will start transitioning all channels to MPEG 4 starting in 2017 and finishing the transition in 2019.

This means my tuner of choice (the R5000) will stop functioning because it only supports MPEG2.

Is there currently a working and reliable HD-PVR from Hauppauge that works with SageTV, the HD300, and livetv on the HD300?

From what I've read in the various HD-PVR 2 threads, this has never been very usable with the extenders.

If anyone does have it working reliably, model numbers would be appreciated.

Thanks.

For now you have time sorry only reliable with HD 300 is the HD-PVR or Colossus how ever you could just look in to Android MiniClient then should be about used the new model HD-PVR 2 and Colossus 2

Hi SHS,

I was worried about that. I know there were problems with the Colossus when it first came out with SageTV, have those been rectified? Is this the model to get? https://www.amazon.ca/Hauppauge-Colo.../dp/B004OVE2B4

Any word on whether or not the open source project has looked into improving support with the newer HD-PVR's?

If I have to get new HD-PVR's (or Colossus) and new Android extenders, I'm pretty sure I'm just going to give up on SageTV and get a DVR from my satellite company. When I lose the capabilities of the R5000, it looks like I will need the following to get back to where I am currently:

-new satellite receivers to replace R5000 ($200 for both)
-HD-PVR for each receiver ($150-$250 each, for a total of $300-$500)
-A couple of Android extenders (not sure how much these are, $100-$200 for two?)
-My current SageTV server isn't powerful enough to run comskip on h.264 content, so I would need a new server too ($800-$1500 maybe? no idea, it's been a while since I built a computer)

So I would have to spend all that money, just to get back to the exact same place I am currently at. Or I could just buy a dual tuner DVR from Shaw Direct for $250.

I've been using SageTV for almost 12 years, but it's hard to justify continuing to put money into it.

If read the other post the problem is in the HD 200/300 firmware which we can't be fix that why you have replace them.
The problems with the Colossus is you may have setup your system to do daily reboot which not a big deal but then agine you may never need to do that at all.

If needed new system rigth now just build i5 or i7 the latest 5xxx or 6xxx Series or I wait in tell the next Gen microarchitecture Zen from AMD come out it should make a world of improvement over the last gen I hope but if you it need rigth now then look at AMD FX-8300 to 8370 or A10-7870K
I have older A10-5800K as my SageTV server but I do not used comskip and really suck as IR no longer work on latest model Hopper 3 with all new UI system BooHoo.

Sounds to me you are already making up your mind I can't imagine any of us got into this because it was somehow cheaper than using the off-the-shelf cable box. So, if the cost really was your justification 12 years ago, then, yeah, it'll be much cheaper to throw in the towel.

But, if you re-discover your reason for buiding your own PVR... You can adjust your math, a little.

The original HDPVRs work quite well with sagetv. I have 2 of them, and I've used them with HD200s and HD300s, and now more recently the Android MiniClient. So, if you find used ones on kijiji or ebay you can keep your HD300s and avoid the cost of buys Android clients. (I moved from HD300s to Android because I like having all my apps in one device... Netflix, Youtube, Movie Trailers, and SageTV)

Given that your current hardware was used for recording... not sure you need to upgrade it, so thowing in a new server upgrade because the R5000 mods are going away, seems odd. Granted if you don't have the donators version of comskip, you will need that, but not sure you need an entirely new server.

Again... sort of sounds like you made up your mind... and I'll be there some day as well... since the order I get, the less time I like to spend "tinkering" with this stuff (this PVR thing is a younger person's hobby)

Do the new cable boxes you can rent offer component output? This alone could determine what route you take.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

It's not that I don't enjoy tinkering with things, it's the fact that I would essentially be putting a lot of time, effort and money into something that seems like a dead platform. A lot of the very talented SageTV developers have left (I just saw that Slugger no longer uses SageTV anymore).

I have a couple of those HDMI splitters from Amazon that very conveniently strip HDCP. So no problem there.

Current server isn't powerful enough to do Comskip on h.264 in a reasonable amount of time (especially not two h.264 streams at once).

Actually a number of devs are still around and very active as well as a number of talented new devs... the forums have not been this active in years.... but we each need to decide for ourselves.

What is your CPU? Also, comskip works with a few GPUs now.
