BUT, as I started to test the recording, I realized that you can not designate a folder in which to put the recording. I have folders, Si-Fi, PBS, Movies etc so that when I want to look for something to watch I know where to start. PLEASE tell me there is a plugin or another way to do this. I added all my folders into the recordings but when I schedule a recording, I see no way to tell Sage (funny name if you think about) where to put it.

For imported videos, you can organize into a folder structure, but not for TV recordings made by Sage.

Did you move the files to a subfolder in your recording directory path? SageTV doesn't normally scan those folders for changes. If you moved the files into a subfolder in one of your media import folders, SageTV should find the files, ut may flag them as archived.

Check detailed setup, under General on left pane, video recording directories on right pane. Copy your recordings to the folder under video recording folders, and sagetv should see them. I have done this many times and it has worked fine.

Sage is not desgned around folder based sorting of recordings. Instead, it doesn't really care where recordings reside, as they are displayed based on their metadata.

I moved 5 recorded (some NOT by Sage) files from G:\Default to G:|Shorts TV and had the program rescan. I still do not see them. In BTV, after all these years I finally see why, if you wanted to move any files you moved them within the WebUI - I guess that way the metadata could easily follow.

Few things. One, you should not have more than one recording folder per drive with Sage. Doing so will mess with Sage's free-space management. Two, you should not have a folder setup as both a recording folder AND an import folder. ANY item in any of the folders that does not have metadata linking it to a recorded airing will show up in the Video Library. ANY item in any of the folders that does have metadata linking it to a recorded airing will show up in Recordings. The only differences between a recording folder and a video folder are:
1. SageTV will only record to a Recordings folder. 2. SageTV will only scan subfolders in a Library folder. Moving files between folders with sage is pretty transparent. You move it, and on rescan, as long as the filename is the same, sage will connect it to the old metadata in it's database. More importantly, though - you should probably think about just simplifying the arrangement in general. I can't think of a single reason to have '12 or so' folders on a single drive when using sagetv. I, personally, have 1 recording folder on each drive, and on a couple of the drives I have some very simple import folders (KidsMovies, NonKidsMovies, TV Shows). And even then, the only reason I have them split up is to separate out kids and non-kids views. I don't think I have ever viewed anything in SageTV 'by folder'.

Also, in the folder view of the Videos Section I'm missing 90%. Ok, so let's say I have ONE folder G:\Default, as a recording folder. I still list all the others in the "Library". I record something, and then move it from G:\Deafault (get it?) to ... G:\Shorts TV, upon a rescan it should show up ... where? Under Recordings? Dandy! Video's? I'll live with it. I CAN move the files outside of Sage - correct? Now as far as folders, for me, way back with 8" floppies, I learned early on. that many directories were a good thing - of course the floppy was pretty much the folder/directory. To me it's still a good thing. Still do it on everything - You'd freak if you knew how many I had in my Data directory. Plus it's nice to know that I can pop into, say, my DIY Folder and see just those sort of recordings. One more question, and I think I'm getting there - You folks ARE GREAT!, did I tell you that yet? Categories: I noticed when I setup a recording I could enter/add one or more. By checking one of them, does THAT recording take on that "category"? So I could search my them? THANK YOU SO MUCH - ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sage has two concepts for video folders: Video Recording Directories and Media Center Import Directories. Those are the full names that Sage uses when you go to configure them. Only import directories have their subfolders scanned, as Fuzzy alluded to.
If you move a file from a recording directory to an import directory, Sage should rediscover it, but there are caveats to this (false duplicates being the most common). However, I think where it shows up depends on what UI you're using to view things. Are you using the default STV, Gemstone, TV Explorer, Phoenix? Are you using the BMT plugin? If you're on the default STV, I would strongly urge you to try out one of the others because I think you'll find that they accomplish nearly everything you want without needing to worry about subfolders. Personally, I have my ripped discs organized like this and the UI shows them exactly how I expect them to in both Gemstone and TV Explorer: \\W7-Server\Videos\TV Shows\TV Show Name 1\Season 01\MKV file \\W7-Server\Videos\Movies\Movie Name 1\MKV file I have the folders and files named according to Kodi's expectations and Sage has no issue with that. I have just one recording directory at: \\W7-Server\Recordings (DVR)\ If you're moving Sage recordings outside of the recording directory, I would suggest that you rename them to something else. For me, it keeps things much cleaner. PluckyHD has a great tool for that very purpose.

I DO have the BMT plugin installed - why? AND what would one of the other UI replacements do for me? Quote:
REALLY BIG THING: Either in Recordings or Library, I'm not seeing 75%-90% of what is on the disk - seems that the more I run the re-scan, I might get one or two more to show up but ... I'm also getting Phoenix errors I realize I just laid a lot down here - as you did you help - Did I thank you guys yet? - but right now, I just want 2 things - 3 things; Move the files to folders and have them show up, have all my stuff show up somewhere, and figure out the Phoenix errors, can't give you a prtscrn, but: 1. Error in VFS File: .\userdata\Phoenix\cache\vfs-cache.xml; null 2. unable to download\update the phoenix views ... Phoenix may not work How do I reinstall - that would appear to be part of the troubles.

If you are just using the Stock UI, than the phoenix views are not necessary (but that is the part that you likely will appreciate once you see it in action). IN any case, the vfs-cache and phoenix views issue is due to googlecode shutting down. There's a fix here, but as I said, they are only used in the non-standard UI's (Gemstone and Phoenix, primarily).
Items not showing up on a scan, however, likely means you have a file that is causing the scan to abort for whatever reason. It's not often, but some files can be corrupted in such a way that the sage scanner chokes on them. You'd need to look in the log to see what's going on with that. (You'll need server side debug logging enabled in Setup -> Detailed Setup -> Advanced; the logfile is sagetv_0.txt) If you DO get the phoenix views working in Gemstone, you can set up hierarchical views in just about any way you want, and it won't matter one bit where your files are stored.

So I can leave you folks alone for a while, 2 things only: 1. Can I have all videos either in Recordings|All or Video's? 2. Will Gemstone alow me to view by Folder, or make me think I'm viewing them by folder - I have absolutely NO problems being tricked by magic.

Gemstone allows you to create a menu item with filters to allow only certain folders, or 1 folder to be viewed. You can set it up so you have a menu for children movies and then create submenus by genre, or by folder or based on other things you may want to do. Gemstone is very customizable. I have a folder with latest movies sorted by year then when I select the year I want it shows me the newest movies first. I also have a unwatched movies submenu under my videos on main menu. It looks like I have a different directory with just the unwatched movies, but I don't . You can do anything you want with Gemstone with filters. and Gemstone 2 is in the works which sounds like it will be incredible.

You can ignore the errors for now. To get to the filters, you navigate to the menu you want to change the settings on and then right click mouse which will open up options or if you have options key mapped to your remote, do that. there you can use sagetv or gemstone rules to config what you want to see. Bets way to find out is to experiment because there are so many options.

So is the built-in EPG in sagetv now officially offline? I lost all EPG info the other day and haven't been able to get it back up and working. If its time to make the switch to something else I will, but I'd rather just stick with the built-in one if I can.
