Which is where things like fast forward, rewind, and what not start to break horribly on Plex. As such skipping around is a lot easier to do, as there is a LOT less overhead involved in doing so.

It should be noted that Plex works a LOT better when you're trying to FF/REW on a h264 encoded program stream encoded at a resolution/framerate supported by the device you're viewing on.

Skipping around on an mpeg2 recording on plex on the local network is pretty fast, even on an iPad or other non-mpeg2 friendly devices at least in my experience. I do run a fairly powerful backend though.

The thing that's the most annoying for me for plex playback is that it ignores the .edl files used to do auto commercial skip. If it supported that, then I would need to skip a lot less often on recordings.

Asking Plex to support EDL seems to fall on deaf ears. I don't know if they don't care or just don't want to get involved in the commercial skipping debate.

It's certainly possible... I just don't find it a compelling feature to work on (I have way too much other stuff to work on)
