Static IPs or DHCP reservations?

I used to use reserved DHCP addresses for most of my devices, but have ended up with some power issues lately causing all sorts of problems when the server or device gets powered up before the DHCP providing router, and just decides to use it's own self-generated IP, only renewing with the then powered up DHCP server on a restart of the device.

Since then, I use locally configured static IPs on the things that need to be available, whether the rest of the network is or not. My HDHR's, my unRAID server, my router and access points all have local static IP's. All other 'stationary' devices (printers, desktops, extenders, etc) are using reserved DHCP leases outside the pool range, and usually 'grouped' together. 'mobile' devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) are just given dynamic IP's in the DHCP pool.

regarding getting a list of all devices on the network, I've found SoftPerfect's Network Scanner to be invaluable at home and at work.
