Recording Streaming in Sagetv - How?

I know some may say it is an oxymoron but I want to decide how long to keep or when to watch. We don't watch new shows until we know it has been renewed and know some streaming services don't keep them that long.

So, can it be done?
What is needed?
Anyone else doing it and your experience?

Current setup we use hvr-1600s with satellite boxes

PlayOn. You can set a subscription to the show, and it will record it when new episodes are made available, and point sagetv to PlayOn's playlater folder. I even made a script somewhere that extracted the chapter marks in the recordings and made .edl files for comskip.

Thanks. And I see that PlayOn has a sale currently. Lifetime Membership $39.99

Nevermind below. After a chance to read further, see that no additiona HW would be needed

So what other pieces (hardware) would I need?
Guess something to stream with like a roku or something other?
I'm guessing that the hvr-1600 wouldn't cut it either and would require another type of capture card/device?

Last edited by graywolf; 07-01-2017 at 06:18 AM. Reason: did additional research into Playon

There's no other hardware with Playon. It just runs on your server. It connects to the streaming website in a hidden window, logs in with your credentials if needed, starts the stream and records it in real time. Then it acts as a UPNP sever so you can play back the recordings from any software or hardware on your network that knows how to discover UPNP servers.

There is a UPNP plugin for Sage that can be used to play back recordings from Playon. It can also schedule recordings in Playon.
