Remote Desktop

I have Windows Remote Desktop working on my Home Computer. I can log on with my Laptop with no problem. However, when I double click on SageTV, it just pops up a blank screen. All other programs work good. Is there a way to use SageTV over the internet using Remote Desktop?

What I want to do is log on, wake up SageTV, select programs to record, and put SageTV back to sleep? This is useful to me when I am on long buisness trips (1-5 mths long). Do I have to buy Sage Client to do this? I don't need to watch the shows until I return so, I don't need streaming video.

Thanks for the help.

I use TightVNC to view my home desktop and I can "see" SageTV normally. I don't have any experience with Windows Remote Desktop.

I've been using RealVNC, but there is lag. I'll have to try out TightVNC. Might save me from having to buy another monitor.

Ultr@VNC has worked well for me.

As to the original question, my guess is that it's because of 3D Accelleration, you can try turning that off and it might help.

I've seen the same issue and IIRC Stanger is correct. Problem is you probably want 3dA to work when your using Sage locally but just not when using RD - an easy way of web sceduling.

A "ctrl-click" kinda sequence to disable 3dA when waking Sage would be nice.

Yes, it's because of the 3D acceleration. Disable it and SageTV works fine through Remote Desktop (also called Terminal Services). Well, I say "fine" but watching Live TV fails for me. It gives an MPEG2 audio renderer not found.

If you're using Windows XP Pro and *VNC, you really ought to checkout Remote Desktop. Both are free, but Remote Desktop is faster than VNC and the ability to enable Remote Desktop comes built into WinXP Pro. Remote Desktop also "pipes" the sound to your client. Like VNC, there's a Remote Desktop client made for Windows XP/NT, Mac OS, Linux and I believe Pocket PC. Remote Desktop client has the advantage of being already loaded on all Windows XP machines.

If I ever want to access my home computer, I can do it from any Windows XP machine hooked to the 'net without loading anything.

FWIW, I've had no problems leaving 3D Accelleration enabled with Ultr@VNC, plus VNC has the added advantage that it doesn't log out the local session like Remote Desktop does.

Very true unless you're running Win2000 or 2003 server and terminal services. Ya, I'm sure we're all running that

I don't have too much of a problem with logging me off. I'm not there anyway.

Yeah, but I hate having to log on to my HTPC, that just ruins the STB feel that I like

Actually, it doesn't nessecarily log you out, with XP & 2k, it locks your local screen when you're in TS. Now with the next release of Windows Media Center, the XP they include will let you have multiple concurrent logins, hopefully someone will get the reg keys that it sets so you can do that once SP2 is released .

Utr@VNC note: if you have installed the virtual display adapter that comes with it it will break MPEG2 DXVA accelleration (as the virtual display adapter does not support it!)
It will (probably) never show the contents of overlays (but VMR9 should be displayed, if slowly!)
Otherwise it works fine

Moving On Past Remote Desktop

Thanks everybody on the help on remote desktop. It was the 3D that was messing things up. Turned it off and everything works fine. I can now schedule show to record using Remote Desktop.javascript:smilie('')
coffee

Moving on.... I got Wake On LAN/WAN to work. However, I cant use Remote Desktop because windows doesn't load the Remote Desktop Services. Is there a way to have Remote Desktop Services enable when it boots from an off status.

What I am trying to do.... I have a 6 mth business trip in which I will miss all my shows. My wife has a habit of turning off the computer. I want to wake up the computer (Wake on Lan/Wan), Remote Desktop, and schedule my shows. Then download the shows to my local computer and watch them.

Thanks
