Editing Captures?

I don't see any way to specify which type of output stream to capture to i.e. Program, Transport, DVD, etc. I have seen some posts that say you should always use Program Streams if you want to be able to edit the resulting file. Is this true, and how can I set this?

Does anyone have any recommendations for editing software (specifically to use only cutting segments out) to use on the resulting captures from SageRecorder?

OPS what was I think at the time.
With sagetv or sagerecorder the recording are program stream

Sage uses program stream for all captures that aren't specified as 'DVD'. Those use a 'DVD' compliant stream (honestly, I don't know the difference). Read the document on the support section of our website about quality settings for the Hauppauge card; you can customize it there if you'd like.

Sage dosen't use the DVD streams option in fact it not need unless you want use something like SpruceUp been that only help pain neck apps that are alway crying about compatible.
Also min mpeg edit will not work with that DVD option.

For the Hauppauge cards in V1.0, the Bitrate setting in the Audio tab of Setup doesn't do anything. You need to use the one in the properties file for that specific quality. If you'd like me to give you an example of a quality setting, tell me the specs you want and I'll tell you what it should be.

For V1.1 it uses the audio bitrate in Audio Setup instead of the one specified for that quality (if you want to try a beta of V1.1, pm me).

I think I recommended this elsewhere here as well, but TMPEG (used to be Tsunami MPEG) is shareware and has some very useful tools.

These include multiplexing and demultiplexing audio (useful if you want to record the MPEG to AC3) and the MPEG cutter. It can take segments from several (or just one) MPEG and make a new file out of it, hence, removing the adverts.

Just search for TMPEG on Google for a free download.

also try mpegVCR. It is not free, but it works super, and is very easy to use. You can even add simple transitions. On the other hand if you want to spend a ton of $$$ look into ADOBE Premiere. The learning curve is high, but it is a profesional grade software. It comes bundeled with some editing/capture cards.

TMPEG won't even read the CBR NTSC files created using wintv-pvr-350 hardware I've tried...

I'm currently using the nanoMPEG editor that came with wintv, everything else ive tried (Studio8) is incredably slow:

It works great with svcd format files, but laggs and distorts really bad with DVD format files. I've had other problems with DVD formats too, such as audio lag when rendered and burned to dvd, but svcd works great. When it works, its very fast (no rendering or loss of quality). Great for cutting out the commercials!

The more I use it, the more I HATE the NANOMPeg editor. I apologize for suggesting it. It frequently creates corrupted files which, strangely, will play usually on the computer, but the length is wrong. However they WONT play correctly in dvd player, AND the terrible editor cant even edit the corrupted files it created! So you gotta do allot of double-checking to see if the files you made are any good, and try different cut frames which usually gets around its bug.

So does ANYBODY know of a decent editor which works with the Hauppauge files, and DOESENT cost hundreds of dollars? Or maybe certain file formats work better than others?

I expected to be able to edit out the commercials and burn to dvd player-compatable disks in a reasonable amount of time (as in no re-encoding), but it sure hasnt worked out that way. I mean I can do this but it takes ALLOT of time, and the results are iffy with allot of coasters (and dvd coasters aint cheap either).

TMPEG should be able to open your MPEG files. Don't put the MPEG in to the main front screen. If you go to the menu at the top and pick TOOLS-> there is an option to preview and cut files together.

If the PVR350 has created a standard DVD compliant MPEG2,
TMPEG should be able to Cut, Multiplex and Demultiplex it.

In fact, NanDub / Virtual dub should be able to edit MPEG files. They don't support MPEG2 directly, but there is a version forked from the original source which handles MPEG2. I think it's available on sourceforge.

Thanks for the advice. Yes it appears that TMPG wont read the files... cant split or join if it cant read them. I know about the mpg2 mod'ed virtual dub, but it cant output mpeg2 so cant be used to make compliant files...

You need install the Elecard Decoder or you need Ligos Decoder.
