Captions

My network recently got hit by lightning and took out at least 3 computers. Time to rebuild I guess.

Over the years I have had various success getting Captions to work. I am currently building an Intel I3-12100 Alder Lake system using embedded graphics. Everything is working except Captions, which I have struggled with for years on quite a number of different clients (mostly embedded graphics), some work, some don't.

On this build, I have tried Windows 11 and Windows 10, both behave the same (SageTV 32 bit works correctly, but when I turn on captions, I get a large gray box in the center of the screen with no text). On the left and right edges, the background video is playing correctly.

Do I need a different motherboard, or different CPU? Am I forced to try a discrete video card? What's the secret sauce?

I think you need to ask a moderator to move your post to the Sage TV Software subforum. It will get better / proper visibility there as I think it is a software issue.

I have never really gotten captions working on a Windows Client in the recent (5 year) past. I've depended, almost exclusively, on HDx00 boxes and captions work great on them, as they were designed to provide that functionality. I have not yet tried to use captions on my FireTV client.

I did a search of "captions" of the Sage TV sub-forum. I found multiple posts discussing the subject. It looks like you are out of luck with 64 bit software, but may have work-arounds for 32 bit software.

Now I need to check the one computer where I have the Client installed. I may have installed the 64-bit version there.

Good Luck

Are you running 64-bit or 32-bit? I found a decoder that works for 64-bit, which I detailed in this post. I'm still using it and it works well on multiple Win10 machines.

I am running 32-bit. Elecard with EVR gives me the same result as he SageTV hardware MPEG decoder (big caption box in the middle of the screen with nothing in it, video playing in narrow band at left and right sides of the video box).

I installed 64-bit SageTV, and Elecard is not an available option.

I have both 32-bit and 64-bit installed on my laptop. Elecard doesn't show as an option for 32-bit, but I've had pretty good success with the ATI MPEG2 Decoder on 32-bit.

On 64-bit, I do see the ATI Decoder but it doesn't work. The 64-bit Elecard Decoder I found does show up and works great.

One thing, my laptop is running Win10 and I am running VMR9 instead of EVR because it works with these decoders, so you might try VMR9.
