Windows XP SP2?

Anyone try the new service pack for XP with SageTV?

I ran it for a little while (RC2 that is). It seemed to work fine except for dancing/bouncing video, but I think that's due to my video card/drivers and not SP2.

SP2 was made available to MSDN subscribers over the weekend.

it seems like this is SP2 download. Not trough the windows update. I guess this is good if you like to have single download and then install on multiple machines. It was posted on 8/8/04 so I guess this is the latest SP2 that MS released.

this is similiar to how they made directx 9.0c available

it is not in windows update yet but you can get it from directx now

It'll be on windows update later this month (I think it was like the 20th, or 28th, something like that). I've had absolutely NO problems with SP2 RTM (final Release to Market), but then again, I've not had any problems with any of the betas.

The Windows Firewall that gets installed and enabled in the SP2 upgrade will likely conflict with the SageTV Server and Client communication (can anyone verify). While there are various ways to re-configure the Firewall, could someone post a simple one that has been shown to work? I haven't yet updated to SP2 or I'd do it (nor do I know off-hand what Port #'s are used).

I built out my new SageTV box (Asus P4P800-VM, P4 2.8 HT, PVR 350, GeForce 5700LE) with XP SP2 and its working great. Of course TV-OUT on the 350 is a nightmare (not an SP2 issue), but S-Vid out of the 5700LE works great.

Works fine on my client/laptop/test machine, haven't had time to image/install it on my HTPC/Sage server yet though.

I disabled it since I have a router
no reason to use two firewalls

also you can allow all traffic for certain programs
I do not know why windows software firewall would be any different than any other one

After I installed SP2, the first time I started SageTV on the server machine it popped up a box asking if it was ok to allow SageTV. Said yes, and that's about all there was too it.l

I don't recall having to do anything for the client.

I did however enable filesharing thru the firewall on both machines for other reasons though. Don't think you normally would need to for SageTV otherwise unless maybe if you're using UNC paths for the video directories.

i have the trial version of sagetv installed. configuration as follows:

Server:
PIII/1GHz, 1GB RAM, 3 * 200GB HD (IDE), 1 PVR350, 1 PVR250
Windows XP Pro / SP2 final
DirectX 9.0c

all works fine without any problems!

Thats fine if you are on a wired only network with no wifi access possible. I run all my wifi connections as virutal networks so they cannot talk to each other or the wired PC's(through the router that is, they can still talk peer to peer even with adhoc disabled if the intruder knows what he is doing). Even then, I still run the firewall as it does not hurt and it alerts you when an evil app tries to access the internet without your permission. FYI, I installed sp2 on 3 PC's Last Friday and it's been running like a champ. Sage works great with it.

Ah, my issue is that my Server is running WinXP, not my Client. It could be that this difference is important to the SP2-enabled Firewall.

This I had to do as well. After that, the Server ran fine.

I'm actually running Win2k on my Client. stranger89 points out that this may be significant as his setup is the reverse of mine and he apparently didn't have my same issues.

Ah... In other words you've disabled a feature of the Firewall. That's what I'm looking for. I suppose there is probably a more pointed solution to this (e.g. enabling the specific TCP Socket Port SageServer Listens/Accepts on), but this is good news. It turns out I'll likely want local File Sharing enabled as well.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll give mls's solution a try...

If anyone has a more pointed solution, feel free to post :-)
