RAM gets all used up

When I'm watching TV on Sage in a window I can see the RAM usage on my computer climb higher and higher in Coolmon. It does this at a rate of about 1mb every 2 seconds.

I have 512meg and when it gets to about 508mb used it dumps nearly 100 meg and starts climbing up again. This is fine when just watching tv but it makes starting up any other programs or even firing up the epg really slow. Is there any way to fix this?

I was thinking it has something to do with Java garbage collection freeing up memory. Is there any way to make it do that more often?

My impression is that it is the memory being used to cache the disk read/writes, since if you watch SageTV's memory usage, it doesn't climb as high as the overall system memory usage shows. At least, that _seems_ to be the case according to what I've seen on my system. Getting more RAM doesn't seem to do anything, since it just eats everything available. I think that watching/recording just one show doesn't seem to do this as much as watching/recording multiple shows at once.

I'm not watching more than one show at once. It seems like there's not enough cleanup beacause it can just dump all that memory when it gets to full.

The memory doesn't get attributed to Sage, as was said. This is just kinda annoying. Anyone who might happen to be trying other forntends have this happen?

I just saw the link to thread as I was posting. I'll check that out. Thanks for your responses.

I had forgotten about that other info regarding Norton. I'm rechecking that too...

jphhughes: I must have missed the end of that other thread, because I remember the contents, but not the resolution. Did you have to exclude all your video directories too, or are you storing your videos under the SageTV directory? I just now excluded the Frey Technologies dir & all video directories, since excluding just the Frey Tech dir didn't seem to have any effect. All it might have needed was an exclusion for .mpg files... but I suppose it is probably safer to specify the directories instead.

I'll keep running it this way for a while... if this is an improvement, maybe I'll remember it this time!

At that time the video directory were set to default by the installation program. So when I excluded the Frey directory it included the subdirectories.

Since then I have moved SageTV onto its own PC with the video directories on the D: drive. As a point of interest I did not have Nortoron installed on that machine, however due to a possible virus problem from downloading some drivers from the Hauppague site I installed norton on the Sage machine to check for a virus. I started to get the same problems. So it seems to be consistant. I have have since removed Norton once I did not find any virus.

Thanks for the info & the reminder about that other thread. I don't remember seeing your solution last time, but I will certaily remember it now. Excluding those video directories (not sure if the SageTV dir needs to be excluded too, but I did anyway) has helped my system too. This sure seems like another mark against NAV -- it can interact with Windows Messenger to mute all sound & it also seems to interfere with mpg playback, at least through SageTV... not sure what other problems it can cause. I wonder if other antivirus software has this problem?

That's a very good queston. I was going to post a request for suggestions on anti-virus software other than Norton. In that old thread two suggestions were made for McAfee .

My Sage systems is behind a router and firewall so it is not exposed except when I download drivers. I think I will take my changes and not run any anti virus software.

It still would be good to know what anti virus software does work well with SageTv.

I excluded all the sage directories and that helps when the half hour or hour passes and it needs to switch files.

But it sure didn't do anything about my RAM problem. I use NAV but I was using AVG a few days ago and had the same problems then.

Any other ideas besides buying more RAM?

Where did you make the exclusions in NAV? I put them in Options -> Auto-Protect -> Exclusions. Do you have other utilities running that could interfere? You really should have no problems with 512MB -- I'm only using 384MB.
