Weird problem with SageRecorder Video Dir

Hi!

I just setup one of my systems as a network recorder and everything seemed to work fine until I went to watch the video the network encoder captured.

For some reason, it was NOT stored ion the drive in the directory I specified in the Video Directory parameter (k:]TV Capture 1). It was instead stored in D:\TV Capture, it even created the TV Capture directory on drive D.

Has anyone seen this before? Any idea what is going on?

Karen

I believe this may be caused by you trying to use different directories on your client and server. The recording is made to the directory specifed by the server which is probably specified as the D drive. You are then trying to view the file using the client software that you told to use the K directory.

Also, since it created the directory on D, indicates that you probably are not sharing the server D drive with your client. The network encoder is supposes to store the shows in the same directory as the regular encoders.

carlgar,

Thanks for the reply!

So there is no way to have the server store to one directory and the network encoder store to a specific different one?

If this is true, then enabling the network encoder feature in Sage Recorder should disable the video directory box.

You can store in a different local drive, but it will open up a lot of other problems. I am not sure of what all the side effects are with 2.0 since I still use 1.4. The primary problem is that the server will not see the recording and will not list the recording. It will probably try to re-record the shows again.

On the surface it does seem like the the video directory box should be disabled. However, this would force the client to obtain the directory name from the server which it currently does not do.

This is really kind of interesting. I thought I had the problem resolved. Since I wanted the network encoder to use drive K and SageTV to use drive D, the simple solution seemed to be to reassign the drive letter on the SageTV system from D to K.

But it seems as if Sage is going out of its way to make things difficult. If I move a recorded show into the capture directory on the network encoder system, as soon as SageTV recognizes it, it deletes it!!

I am getting confused by your terms. The network encoder card is in your client system. What are you referring too by the SageTV system, the client or the server?
I doubt if SageTV is deleteing it. Sage is probably moving it into the video library.

I have two system that I am using for Sage that are both connected via a LAN. One system is running SageTV and the other is running SageRecorder. I am not running SageTV Client on any system.

I think that Sage is actually deleteing the file. I completely searched both system and the only copy of the video found is my original one. Like I said . . . weird! <G>

Sounds like the recordings were deleted. I don't think you will be able to do what you want to.
There are probably some work arounds you could use, dependant upon why you want the recordings on the client K drive. If your client will always be on, then you could share the Client K drive with the server.
You could also just copy recordings from the server to the client K drive.

btw: since you don't have the client software, where was the video directory parameter you referred to in your first post?

It was in the Multimedia tab of the setup window of SageRecorder.

On the SageTV Configuration page, see Setting up Network Encoders & note the first paragraph where it mentions:
Quote:
The one main constraint is that all of the drives that are used by the SageTV server for storing video must be network shares. They can be referred to in the SageTV setup using their UNC pathnames (i.e. \\computer\share) or using mapped drives. If you're using mapped drives, the same drive letter must appear on the SageTV PC as well as the SageRecorder network encoding PC.
It sounds like you were recording to some dir & then moving/copying the resulting files to a SageTV video dir, based on the comment that the only copy that remained was the original video.

Andy,

What I am trying to do is to set things up so that video recorded from 1 tuner goes in one place and video from the other tuner goes to another place. I am trying to do this because I record 2 types of videos; those that get watched and deleted and those that go straight to DVD.

I think I read somewhere on the forum (haven't found the right keyword to locate it again yet) that you can kind of select where things get recorded by having certain channels appear on in a specific tuners channel map. When I first tried it, I obviously did something wrong because it removed the channel from both tuners.

OK. I won't say that can't be done, but I am not familiar with doing that. As far as I know, SageTV just uses all of its Video Dirs to store the recordings, regardless of the source tuner.

Is that what you will get, though, if you have SageTVRecorder save them to a different directory that SageTV cannot see? It sounds ilke that is what happened (saved to a specific dir), but that the side effect is no visibility inside SageTV. Perhaps make that dir a UNC style dir as a Library Import Dir. The problem there is that I think SageTV will currently see them as 0 length videos since it will first see them when they are just being created.
