Info needed to make calibration DVD.

As mentioned on a few other threads, I have Video Essentials and have used AVIA (even though I do not own it.

Recent post her with information on COLOR CALIBRATION have made me wonder....

I'd like to MAKE a SHORT personal CALIBRATION DVD for use with SAGE and a PC DVD player with COLOR CORRECTION and GEOMETRY.

Very basic, with just static images and instructions for use.

What SIZE images and DPI should be used to create these images for DVD? 720x480?? 720x525? How many DPI? to get the clearest picture?

I don't want to just copy th VE disk images, as I feel I could get clearer ones if I use COREL or ADOBE to make the screens.

Basically you've got two options:
1) Make it at standard DVD resolution, that's 720x480.
-This would be good in that it would work in any DVD player/DVD software
-It's limited in that it will rely on the scaling/AR corrections done in your DVD player.

2) Make it at your display's native resolution.
-The big downside of this is that it most likely can't be a DVD. For example, with an HDTV you could make a 1920x1080i test patterns.
-The up side, is that pattern would be perfectly customized for your display. This is somewhat the way DVE is going, there are currently 1080i, 720p, and 480i/p versions available.

I think it would be FUN to have a SHORT, re-usable, reproducable test patterns for calibrating my SAGE and getting a true 4:3 or 16x9.

SAGE is the only PVR software I'm aware of that allows you to stretch and offset both horizontal and vertical aspects, so it would be nice to have some test disc to get the most out of it.

Also, since reading about FFDSHOW and DSCALER, and how we can use this tool to calibrate contrast and color, it would be nice to put this on a disc as well.

Yes, I know AVIA or VE does this, but I just wanted to see if I could do it, and being much simpler, would possibly be quicker.


I could do anamorhic as well (same 720x480 4:3 sized, but with the image stretched (matmatically calculated of course so when the TV "sqeezes it" it will be correct.

Just a fun exercise.

FWIW, I ripped the DVE calibration chapter to my HDD so I can run it whenever I want, quick and simple.
