splitting large Sage TV videos
I have some Sage TV recordings which are 10+ GB. Any suggestions for software which can split them into say two 4GB and a 2 GB file for burning to a DVD? I have unsuccessfully tried trial versions of "EZ Video Splitter 2.01" and "HT Video Splitter and Joiner 2.0" (per CNet recommendations). One can't handle files that size and the other says there is a format error with the file (not compatable). Any suggestions for splitting them?

Well I would think your DVD authoring software should be able to split them. Otherwise Video ReDo and Womble MPEG VCR are probably the best MPEG cutters available.

reply appreciated
I have Ulead DVD MovieFactory, Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6, in addition to Windows Movie Maker. I can split the file within the program for purposes of inserting things such as transitions. However, I don't find an option for saving the split segments to their own individual files of the appropriate size. I will look into the software you mentioned. If anybody else has suggestions I would appreciate any comments you have.

The only other option is the nanocosmos mpeg editor from teh Hauppauge site, however it doesn't seem to work very well. It seems to either crash or mess up the audio/video sync, at least for me.

IMHO Womble's is the best editor. It's frame accurate and fast. I can edit out the commercials from an hour long recording and generate my new MPEG in about 10 minutes start to finish. Stay away from Nanocosmos unless you are editing MPEG1 files, it does a horrible job on MPEG2. I had heard a while back that Hauppauge was actually going to include a stripped down Womble editor but haven't heard anything on this in a long while. Still if you are doing a lot of editing Womble is worth the money.

Stranger89,
I can't seem to find Video Redo info. Can you give me a link to information on it? (product website) So far, Womble has not yet responded to my inquiry asking for verification about the splitting capability. The Ferret |

I've used Pinnacle Studio since v.7. I like it because I can easily split mpegs, remove commercials, create DVD menus and then burned my DVD's all in one package. In addition I use it for importing my home videos and editing them before moving to Sage. Anyway, that's been my experience.

As for Womble it will split it, but it would probably be a two step process, save part a, save part b, kind of thing. |

nielm, I noticed that VideoReDo has the ability to process SmartSkip™ files created by BeyondTV from SnapStream. Would it also be able to read the files created by malore's .stv to skip commercials?

Jere, do you know any more info about this "utility floating around" to convert comskip txt files to VideoReDo project files? This would be awesome...I've done google and forum searches and haven't been able to come up with anything yet! Thinking about trying to write a Perl script that does the transform but I don't know the VideoReDo format so I'd have to do some reverse engineering and so on...if I can avoid that I'd love do be Lazy as in Good Perl Lazy :-)
EDIT: Never mind, I found it on the Sage-Community site, but when I run it it gives me an error and exits (I'll have to check on the error later). I'm running XP SP2 so .NET should be installed AFAIK, I'll have to check... Last edited by David; 10-12-2004 at 11:47 PM. |

VideoRedo project files are trivial plain text, and the cutlist format is public

Thanks for the link, I'll play with a Perl script to do the conversion tonight if I get home early enough. Otherwise it might be Friday before I get to it. I'm sure anyone could use it once I write it, either by running ActiveState's ActivePerl (which I'll use to develop it), or perhaps I'll use my copy of PerlApp to create an .exe file in case others don't want to install Perl.

Of course since VideoReDo already support BTV skip files (which I looked at converting the comskip files to a while ago but I couldn't find any examples of a BTV file that I could work off of and I don't feel like setting up a BTV trial just to try it so I gave up) the possibility is there for them to add support to comskip files, considering how rediculously simple the format is, but we'll see. I'd donate my Perl script to help them integrate but obviously they'd need to rewrite it in whatever VideoReDo is written in. |

You might contact DanR at their site and tell him what you have in mind. You might be able to talk him into a free copy if you explaine what you plan on doing. It would probably double his sales by adding most of the Sage users.

Well that possibility had entered the back of my mind :-) I did just go read a large number of posts over at the VideoReDo forums...the biggest downside I can see is that if they want to integrate my Perl into VideoReDo they'd have to rewrite it in whatever language they're doing. Which may be easy, who knows. But it wouldn't be a plug-and-play integration...although I can still see some benefit to having an addition out that let SageTV users work with VideoReDo easier even it it wasn't built in...I was kind of hoping Dan would catch this thread and see my plea for a donation and offer, but I guess I could go ask :-) I'll see what I can do first. I may be able to use the trial to do the script (maybe I could get a freebie after I finish? I'm still open to before though :-)
